Fugitive Slave Act (1850)

This contributed to the cycle of conflict and cooperation by having the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, which was modified from its original version in 1793, become a necessity to have from multiple Southern politicians. Within this act, it states that any fugitive slave who was to run away, citizens were to help capture them and return them to their owners, denied slaves rights to a jury trial, and increased penalties by having them spend six months in jail as well as paying a thousand dollars. This act started receiving lots of criticism which led to the secession of the states because this law divided the North and South even further. Such events were that the South thrived and the North had many revolts. Which in turn, the act was getting repealed and continued to stay a law, until the start of the Civil War, which then from there, in 1864, were repealed by Congress.

This contributed to the cycle of conflict and cooperation by having two countries fight for land. Before the war, Texas had gained its independence from Mexico in 1836. However, the United States was a bit hesitant with adding Texas, mainly because they didn't want to add another slave state. With that in mind, after the war, it then leads up to the Compromise of 1850. After the war, on February 2nd in 1848, Mexico signed a Guadalupe Hidalgo Treaty, which signified that California, and today's Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and New Mexico for fifteen million dollars along with paying for damages from the war. This led to the secession of the Southern states because now they have admitted and gained states from Mexico (California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, New Mexico, and Utah) that are now having to decide whether to become slave states or free states.

Compromise of 1850

This contributed to the cycle of conflict and cooperation by the United States coming up with five bills to be able to have the continuous disputes on slavery become resolved. Henry Clay was the mastermind not only towards this compromise but also towards the Fugitive Slave Act that also occurs in 1850. The five bills stated within the compromise were that slavery was allowed in Washington D.C., but not slave trade, California identified as a 'free state,' defined new boundaries for Texas as well as having removed some claims of Mexico while providing them ten million dollars in compensation, and the Fugitive Slave Act itself. This will lead to the secession of the Southern states since the Fugitive Slave Act was introduced and it not only added conflicts to both the South and the North but fumed other states considering that the Act appeared as if it were in favor of the South.

Continue to work on using the claim - or thesis - to set the stage for what you're going to tell your audience, not explain everything to the audience at once. Does that make sense? Let me know if you have questions!
