Montag and Mildred are just like all of the other couples in their world don't act like couples from our world. Mildred and Montag do not share trust and love each other. They hide things from the other and don't trust their valuables with the other.

"I wouldn't do a thing like that. Why would I do a thing like that?" she asked. "Maybe you took two pills and forgot and took two more, and forgot again and took two more, and were so dopy you kept right on until you had thirty or forty of them in you."

The rhetorical question demonstrates how Montag and Mildred have no trust for the other. Moreover, this further shows the broken relationship between Montag and Mildred are hard to restored.

Clarisse vs Mildred

Clarisse and Mildred are conflicting individual representations in the dystopian society written by Bradbury. The author describes Clarisse as an inquisitive and peculiar young girl who always questions the society. She demonstrates strong curious mind ‘do you readany of the books you burn?’. The question and the italic readsuggest Clarisse’s bravery and freedom of thought in a society in which people are occupied with mindless entertainment. In contrast to the mainstream society, Clarisse offers a signal of life. This is revealed by the metaphor and imagery ‘miraculous bits of violet amber’, which creates a strong impression about her beauty and perfection. Whilst Clarisse is portrayed as lovable character, Mildred stands in direct opposition to Clarisse. Her obsession for television and technology has dulled her ability to think freely and critically. This is emphasised in the metaphor ‘Mildred had not swum that sea’, which suggests her loss of energy and love for her husband. This also implied the darkness of technology which results in the destruction of humanity.

" Montag did not look back at his wife as he went trembling along the hall ...tremble to subside.'
Techniques:
The author conveys the idea of isolation and unaffectionate relationship between Montag and his wife through environmental description, "trembling along the hall" ,"to the kitchen". The large house forms contrast to the unstable relationship with his wife and the coldhearted emotions that Montag expressed through his movements.
