Earlier this month (March) , an unfortunate shooting happened, targeting the Muslim community in New Zealand. The world was distraught as the news spread, creating awareness towards the racism that still stands today. In my report, I have found several examples via social media, of how people reacted towards this hate against the Muslim community and what they are doing to help prevent this from happening again.

on March 19th, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, spoke at Parliament about the shooting. She did not want to speak the name of the man responsible for this attack. She rather would honor the ones who were lost, speak of their names so the world doesn’t forget the innocent. The strength in her voice shows how much she cares about the lives lost, and how much she wants to honor the innocent. The comments on this video were positive and very moving. They all applaud the strength the community has, and Jacinda for not speaking of the terrorist’s name.

The mother if the mass shooter, spoke out in an interview on a segment called Sunday Night True Stories. This was a powerful find, his mother tries to watch the video her son recorded of him attacking the church. She can not watch the video to the end, and when asked what she thinks should happen to him, she says death penalty. The love and support towards the victims through social media is so powerfull, that a mother would want her own son sentenced the death penalty . The video shows how genuinely distraught and heart broken she is, which has gained her the empathy of viewers around the world.

Another powerful video, although it is negative content, the message behind it is inspiring. A young man wore a hat that read “Make America Great Again” which is made famous by Donald Trump and his dislike towards Muslims as well as other religions and cultures. The crowd was furious, being at a vigil for the shooting at York University in Toronto. They felt he was very disrespectful and kicked him out. The fact there was a vigil in Toronto for this tragedy that happened in New Zealand, shows how social media is a great tool . It helped to gather young adults at a University, to honour those who lost their lives, while also having to stand up towards the disrespect.

This article explains how the Muslim community now have to go against their beliefs while in prayer at the church, by locking their door between prayers. They believe that people should feel welcomed to their church, but with having the doors locked, that sense of comfort is sadly gone now. They are being greeted by the police who are guarding the church, when all they want is to just worship their faith with no worries. Being an article posted on facebook, it has drawn a lot of attention to the community and contracted positive wishes and thoughts towards the situation.

On March 22nd, the community within Wellington, New Zealand, gathered to form a human chain around the mosque. They wanted the people inside the church to feel safe while praying, so they showed their support by surrounding the premise and joining arms. Being one week after the shooting at the Christchurch mosque, the strength has grown within the community as well as around the world! Global News shared this video on Facebook, and I can not help but feel sad about what happened, yet so strong. Seeing people come together like this is truly inspirational, and makes me feel like even through the worst of days, things will get better. Hopefully the rest of the world will see how impactful it can be to come together as one, and how much it can help us all.

Banning firearms

Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand, has created a new gun law after the mass shooting their country suffered. By the banning of any military style semi automatic, assault rifles , and parts that can generate such fire arms, the goal is to prevent this from happening again. She wishes to deny easy access to these fire arms, and magazines that are coexistent with them as well. I think this is proactive, smart, thoughtful and should be done in many other countries. This act of banning, shows how much she cares about New Zealand, and the people that live there. The people that want to live without fear, and suffering. I am hoping this draws attention on Facebook and to more political leaders who should look into their gun laws, and follow the steps of New Zealand.

ABC News Politics posted a video of Justin Trudeau acknowledging the attacks that happened at the mosque. Calling New Zealand our country’s friend, he expresses his condolences to the families who lost loved ones, and shares that as a whole we must do something to help stop this. He makes it well known that this is something that needs to be done as a global team, to end the hate we must work along side each other and take a stand against it. This would be the start of a perfect world, if we could all unite and create a love toward one another instead of spreading this hate. The use of social media has so much potential in this area, to spread love, and create global actions. I believe it can be done using the future of social media.

The women of New Zealand, who are not Muslim, are showing their support and love in a very powerful way! Hijabs are being worn in honor of standing up for the religion and expressing support and love towards the attacks. The powerful pictures posted on Instagram, have gotten a ton of attention within the last day of being posted on there. The three images on the post are captivating, with a short yet sweet caption, summarizing the images. The comments are where most of the impact is shared. Many people are touched by this gesture, while others are a little more negative. Overall, it has caused conversation and acknowledgement towards the event, which is most important.

This post on instagram has tagged #christchurch and #christchurtshooting. This is powerful, thoughtful and beautiful. I love how it says “No room for racsim here” as well as “love and solidarity to our Muslim Whanau.” The top picture says “This is your home and you should have been safe here.” This tribute shows the sympathy and compassion for the victims, and how they should feel safe in their country. The hate and racism should be over in our day and age and it is not. More tributes like this shown globally such as on Instagram is a great way to start that path. We can prevent these tragedy’s when things such as this post gets attention from all over the world.

Chanting for unity

The Global News posted this video on Instagram of a group of students outside Christchurch in New Zealand, paying tribute to the victims with a traditional Indigenous Maori dance called haka. This is traditionally a war dance, used in battle. It involved loud chanting, facial expressions with the tounge, as well as foot stomping and slapping of arms and legs. It was meant to show pride and strength of the tribe. It was also performed when there was peace brought to rival groups. It resembles unity, and I think that is a great performance to demonstrate the strength and support the Wellington community has for the Muslims who were victimized in this tragedy.
