On the letterpressed print I’ve presented the laws I broke the night I attended the party in Shiraz, Iran. The document acts as a reminder to myself, that I am free of the threat I faced at the night of the party, a reminder of my privilege as an individual living in the UK.
 
The acrylic and chalk treated paper is marked with a motorised whip I constructed. The chalk marked paper acts as an artefact that represents my privilege, it visualised the markings that were never made on my body. A disengagement that can also be identified in the motorised whip, a separation of the act of whipping from human agency and my symbolic recreation of an act I have not directly experienced due to my freedom from Iranian Law.

The portraits are accompanied by a text based work that quotes the penal code of Iran, in which it states various laws that enforce lashes. The document has been printed using a traditional letterpress process.  Each portrait is stamped with the number of lashes that the subjects within them owe, and the title is the total amount of lashes owed within the 6 portraits, and the remainder is the amount of lashings I am owed. The work is a 5.1 surround sound audio piece which I have created using found footage from anti-regime protests in Iran. Specifically, the audio comprises 2 different clips recorded at an event in Tehran’s Azadi Street on the 11/01/20.

The methodology of this project shares many similarities with the work of Eyal Weizman’s Forensic Architecture team at Goldsmiths - mining for data to construct a more thorough, overarching narrative of an event. Specifically Lawrence Abu hamdans studies on the politics of sound became heavily considered during the making of this piece. The soundpiece provides a first-person perspective of the shooting of a woman at the protest.
