1) The father will do anything to protect his son. He helps Arnold, by talking to the cherif.
It seems like he can't lose anymore sons, but he still wants to do the right thing about Arnold. L. 72

2) L. 129. The father walk around outside, maybe because i is in chok and want a form for clousher. he’s maybe outside looking for proof or just looking for Eugene.

Example 1:

"But his father's eyes were fixed upon him curiously", (p. 4, l. 85).

The father wants to know what happened too, he is curious - he hasn't got any explanation either. Maybe he is a kind of embarrassed about his son, because he can't understand why he did it. He thought he has taught his son well.

Example 2:

"He knew that his father was out the yard, closing the doors of the chicken houses.", (p. 5, l. 105-106)

The father is going out, it would have been better if he talked to his son instead, because the son needs his help. Which shows us that the father doesn't know how to react or what to do. He is shocked.

Examples:
Example 1)
The father pretends nothing has happened, he encourages Arnold to go get the cow. Now that the first-born is dead, he wants Arnold to be like Eugie (maybe because he was the heir), and now there’s only Arnold left. (Page 6, 132)

Example 2)
He gives the gun to Arnold, which is irresponsible. So he is a irresponsible parent, but he wants the best for his children, because it was given in a good intention (p. 1)

That means the farther is giving Arnold a big responsibility, that a 9 years old child can´t understand and handel. He also don't thinks about the consequence it can have.

Example 2:

(P.4, ll. 84-85) The father want´s Arnold to take responsibillity for he action, and therefor he says quite. We also thinks that the father feels guilty because he gave him the gun, and don't know how to handle the situation.

The parents don't want to talk to Arnold, they avoid him and try not to look at him.
They are disappointed of course.
The father stayed away from the family all day, doing chores around the farm, (P.4, l.99).

(P.4, l.85)
The father is looking at Arnold curiously, because he is confused og disappointed, he wants to know if this is an accident or on purpose.
The fact that the father starts to doubt his own son, makes the tension in the family larger.

It shows the fathers reaction and it gives us a picture of how he is as a person because he doesnt freak out. He is just in a complete shock.

(p.4,l.101)

No one spoke to each other at breakfast, so the father must be a little mad at Arnold, because instead of helping him, he is just ignoring him.
