Kiku and her best friend Elsie are only 20 years old. Miss S., who is nearly 40 years old, is much older than they are. We also noticed that Kiku seemed jealous of Miss S. One way this appears is how Kiku describes Miss. S.'s physical beauty in detailed and almost obsessive ways in the beginning paragraph- everything from her hair, face, "glittering" eyes, and clothing (p. 20).

On p. 22, Kiku admits that Miss S. is the frequent source of community gossip to help pass the time. We're not sure if this is her own admission of guilt or if she's totally unaware that she's also part of the problem.

The narrator claims that her younger sister Michi first thought Miss S. was "scary" (p. 28). Yet, she goes onto then say that Michi became attached to Miss S. during dancing classes. These are two different accounts. Either Michi, as a young child, really had these vastly different impression or Kiku didn't really know what was going on.

We all agree that the narrator doesn't or can't offer an accurate picture of Miss. S.'s life. However, in any short story or life in general, we don't think any one person can offer a completely detailed overview of reality. Therefore, we argue that Kiku is about as reliable as anyone else given her own limitations.
