Introduction.
Benzene is the simplest organic aromatic hydrocarbon, it is obtained from the destructive distillation of coal, it is also produced from naphta which is obtained from one of the light petroleum fractions. It has a molecular formula of C6H6. The Benzene molecule is composed of 6 carbon atoms joined in a planar ring with one hydrogen attached with each. It is one of the elementary petrochemicals and a natural constituent of crude oil.
Properties.
Physical.
It is a colourless liquid with a sweet smell.
It has boiling point of 80°C and melting point of 5.5°C
It is insoluble in water.
It is highly flammable and burns with a sooty flame.
It has density of 0.87g/cm^3

Chemical.
Benzene undergoes substitution reactions. E.g Chlorobenzene is formed when benzene reacts with chlorine.
Benzene undergoes addition reactions. E.g Cyclohexane is formed when a mixture of Benzene vapour and hydrogen  are passed over a nickel catalyst ta 180°C.
Resonance.
Resonance is a phenomenon in which a single compound is supposed to be existing as a hybrid of two or more compounds differing in the distribution of electrons not atoms. Benzene has two resonance structures showing the placement of the bonds,  it has a resonance structure because all the carbon atoms are sp2 hybridized.
Uses.
It is used to make rubber, plastics, dyes, lubricant, pharmaceutical drugs.
It is an important source of phenol, aniline, and chemicals which are used as pesticides and detergents.
It is a component of gasoline.
