He was educated in Dublin and at Oxford where he excelled as a student. He became a celebrity long before he wrote a single word of literary significance. He played the role of the Aesthete and the English Decadent in front of stunned audiences. He became famous for his outrageous and witty remarks.

In 1888 he published a volume of fairy stories, The Happy Prince and Other Tales. In 1891 his only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, appeared arousing scandalised protest against what was considered its immoral content. In 1887 Wilde became editor of a magazine and published essays and more fairy stories. In the early 1890s he wrote and produced a series of hilarious comedies which were showcases for his epigrammatic brilliance and shrewd social observations. 

He was prosecuted and sentenced to two years' hard labour for homosexual acts. Everyone who had admired him, friends, acquaintances, and his own family rejected him. His wish is granted, but over time his portrait grows old and ugly. The novel conbines the characteristics of realism and some mystic elements that are inherent to Gothic literature:
  • The characters are from everyday life, dynamic (the description of English society of the 19th century)
  • The novel deals with people in society
  • The events and social conditions are represented without idealization (we can see how Dorian is punished for his desire to be young and beautiful forever)
Although, there are some mystic elements in the story. Sometimes, the atmosphere is creepy and frightening. We can see Dorian's maddness because of the influence of the picture. He is even ready to kill his closest friend because of this.

One day, the painter Basil Hallward is working on a portrait of an unusually handsome young man whom he recently met. He is twenty years old, and his name is Dorian Gray. Dorian meets Lord Henry and starts a conversation with him, in which the lord tells the young man about the charms of youth and beauty. After that, Dorian wants to stay young forever.

Meanwhile, Dorian falls in love with the aspiring actress Sybil Vane, a beautiful girl of about seventeen. He constantly attends all her performances and considers her the epitome of talent and beauty. One day, Dorian announces his engagement to Basil and Lord Henry, inviting them to one of the performances. However, it was on this day that the actress played especially poorly, which disappointed Dorian. Dorian and Sybil quarrel, after which Dorian spends a sleepless night wandering around the deserted London, and the next morning, preparing to send her a letter with words of reconciliation, he learns that the girl committed suicide the same evening. It is after this incident that Dorian notices the first changes in the portrait given to him by Basil.

The events moves forward some thirteen years. Dorian, of course, is still young and fresh-faced, but his portrait looks meaner and older than ever. Having met Basil, who wants to talk to him about the rumors that are going around the city about Dorian, he decides to show the artist the portrait and what happened to him. What he sees convinces Basil that the rumors about his friend are the pure truth. Basil tries to convince Dorian to pray, but his words only make Dorian angry and he kills his friend.

Dorian turns to his old friend, the talented chemist Alan Campbell, to help get rid of the corpse. After learning the details of the monstrous story, the man refuses to become an accomplice in the crime. However, Dorian manages to manipulate Alan, and he finally agrees. Thanks to his knowledge of chemistry, he gets rid of the body.

Wanting to forget himself as soon as possible, Dorian goes to one of the London brothels, where he meets Sybil's brother Vane, who has been wanting to avenge his sister's death for many years. He almost succeeds in carrying out his plan, but Dorian's young and blooming appearance inspires him with doubts. Soon James Vane realizes that he made a fatal mistake by releasing his sister's killer, but Dorian manages to escape.

Returning to his usual lifestyle, Dorian goes for a walk in the park with the Duchess of Clouston and her brother, an excellent hunter. Suddenly, a hare jumps out in front of the trio, and Dorian asks not to kill him, but it turns out that the duke accidentally hit a sailor, the same brother of Sybil Vane.

Dorian begins to realize how sinful his life has been, and the impact he has had on other people. Wanting to change his fate, he goes with a knife to the portrait. He cuts the canvas, the frightened servants run into the room and see before them a magnificent portrait of their master in all the splendor of his wonderful youth and beauty, and on the floor is the body of an old wrinkled old man. Thanks to the metaphors and comparisons used by the author, the reader is completely immersed in this mystical story. She captures attention from the first lines and does not let go until the last letter. I really liked the character of Basil Hallward, he seemed to me like the voice of reason in everything that was happening. I did not agree with many of Lord Henry's statements, but this can be attributed to differences in the minds of modern people and people of the 19th century.
