Self-sufficiency-- Leads to people feeling secure about themselves and provides a fundamental wholeness.

Jeannette is a person that depends on herself because her parent do not help her on things parents are supposed to do. Jeannette says, "He hired me on the spot for forty dollars a week" this is a good example of self- sufficiency because she does not depend on anybody not even her parents. She looks for a job even though she's thirteen and brings money home even though she is not supposed too because she is a child. This picture is a good example of the theme because she goes by herself to look for a job and gets hired. Its the first job she gets and she enjoys it.

Broken Promises- This leads to having emotional conflicts and difficulty in relationships with parents.

To start of, this is an example of broken promises because in Jeannette's 10 birthday Rex promise he would stop drinking. Some evidence of the broken promise is, "After all he'd put himself through, I couldn't believe Dad had gone back to booze." Rex was having a little trouble trying to accomplish this goal for her daughter until they had a problem with they car and some woman picked them up and called them poor. Rex took it in a bad way and disappears for three days after he returned drunk. This picture is a good example of the theme because Rex could not live without alcohol which was something horrible for him and the family. Even though he tried to escape he would always come back.

When Jeannette found Oz on the ground she was really disappointed at her Dad because she knew that he was the only one that could have done it. Lori was also disappointed since it was the only chance for her to leave the house and live a better life. This quote is a good example of disappointment because it shows what had happened to make them mad at Rex, "Someone had slashed him apart with a knife and stolen all the money. I knew it was Dad, but at the same time, I couldn't believe he'd stoop this low." The picture of the pig is a good example of the theme because it show that when they found Oz slashed they were so disappointed at their Dad and Jeannette didn't want to believe he would do something like that.

Coming of age-- Leads to Children growing up faster than usual and depending on themselves more. They become an adult faster.

When Jeannette was cooking for herself when she was only three years old it show's us how irresponsible her parents were. The quote, "I was wearing the dress to cook hot dogs, watching them swell and bob in the boiling water" is a good example of the theme coming of age one of the reasons is because she was cooking food for herself when she was only three years old and kids around that age are only supposed to play with toys or do fun things. Another thing is that she got injured while cooking and had to go the hospital. The picture is a good example of the theme as well because it shows a stove that only adults are supposed to use and not kinds.

After Rex returned to drinking Jeannette felt bad because it was something she wanted her dad to stop doing. Jeannette emphasizes that, "With Dad drinking again, and no more money coming in, Mom begin to talk about moving again" this shows that Jeannette accepted that fact that her dad would never leave alcohol even though she asked him. The picture show's that Rex could not escapes the alcohol and because of that there was no money for the family to buy food. They had to move places and eat from garbage's.

Eric was a person that cared for Jeannette more then her family. She liked living with Eric because she knew that her paychecks wouldn't get taken away or she wouldn't be treated wrongly. Jeannette emphasizes that, "My life with Eric was calm and predictable. I like it that way" she was happy to be a normal person and even got married after four years of moving with him. The picture demonstrates the theme of love because it shows two people getting married and loving each other. The only reason people get marrying is because they care and protect for each other.
