self-sufficiency

The picture of coal relates to the time when Jeannette and Brian had to find ways to stay warm in the winter. This represents the theme of self sufficiency as the Wall's children grew up to be self reliant For example, in the chapter "Welch" Brian and Jeannette picked up coal that the trucks dropped to stay warm since they couldnt afford coal it states this in “Pieces of coal were always falling off the trucks when they made their deliveries, and Brian suggested that he and I get a bucket and collect some” this shows they were finding ways to stay warm and not asking help from their mother that would just shrug off their problems.

A theme in the book is the unconditional love Jeannette had for her dad since the beginning of the book she always defended her dad and believed him even after all the hardships. The picture represents the time when Rex calls Jeannette and tells her to bring him alcohol and to visit him while she was skeptical and thought he only wanted to see her for the alcohol, she still went and bought it for him showing that she still cared and loved him and even after all he put them through, in the book it says “But you always loved you old man, didn’t you?” “I did dad” this was in the end of the book and Jeannette never blamed her dad in the book she even thanked him in the acknowledgments.

The picture of trash represents the time Rex promised to build the glass castle and Jeannette and Brian dug out the foundation only for it to be filled with trash this is one of the times the theme of broken promises is shown when Rex who promised his children that he would build a glass castle and made detailed plans for it and Jeannette and Brian believed it and dug a hole for the foundation only for Rex to tell them to put the garbage in it since they couldn't afford trash collection “the hole for the glass castles foundation slowly filled with garbage.’’ After that they lost hope in the glass castle being built as they watched their hard work be filled with garbage.

This picture represents the theme of dissapointment of when Lori,Brian, and Jeannette had to roll Rose mary out of bed to get her to work and the dissapointment Jeannette had in her mother for putting the responsibility on them. The relationship between Jeannette and her mother was filled with dissapointment as in the book it stated “if you want to be treated like a mother,” “you should act like one.” she was dissapointed in Rose Mary for not being a mother to her and her siblings and them having to roll her out of bed so she wouldn't get fired and having to do her work for her.

Forgiveness is a big theme in the glass castle and is shown in many different ways Jeannette had forgiven her parents for her childhood while Brian could not in the end of the book brian stated “you know its really not that hard to put food on the table if thats what you decide to do” this relates to the picture which represents that Brian has not forgiven his parents for not putting food on the table. he also did not forgive his parents for his childhood and rightfully so as he was sexually abused by his grandmother and his parents shrugged it off.

This picture reflectes to the theme of acceptence as Jeannette came to relize her parents wouldnt change their ways of living and acting. Jeannete relizing her parents wouldn't change was shown in the quote “I think that maybe sometimes people get the lives they want.” this shows she accepts the fact that her wouldn't change and they like the way they live.
