1. Prepare the Surface: Clean the area to remove debris and fixtures. Fill and sand any imperfections if necessary.​

2. Tape the Edges: Apply masking tape along the floor edge to protect it from paint.​

3. Cut in Edges First: Use a brush to paint the corners and edges, especially where the wall meets the floor.​

4. Roll the Paint: Use a roller with the correct sleeve and a handle extender to cover larger areas.​

5. Layering Paint: Allow paint to dry between coats (check the paint instructions for drying time). Once the wall layers are done, tape the floor edge to prevent rolling into the wall with floor paint.​

6. Painting the Floor: Cut the wall edges with a brush and avoid getting floor paint on the walls, as this is difficult to correct. Pour paint directly on the floor in small amounts. Start from the farthest corner and work toward the exit.​

   
   

   Make sure to always put the lid back on the paint / bunch and close the bin bag containing the paint on the tray / bag up to stop paint rollers and brushes from drying if you intend to use them with the same paint later on / clean your equipment when you finish with it.

How to paint the floor (always clear the floor before you paint with a broom and dispose of the debris. Make sure you clean the roller and sleeve when you have finished the job)

When painting your walls, be sure to fill and sand any holes you might have made with projector mounts or picture hangings.

Building a bespoke wooden crate for your work is almost like making a basic cabinet. How does you work sit in it? Does it have to be up-right? Can you secure the work to the bottom of the crate? What kind of padding should you use?

Just know you can recycle your cardboard boxes at home and create corners and card wrapping that way!

Think of using fabric or blankets instead of bubble wrap. Best to use plastic sheet material as the first layer to protect the detail and texture of your work (see if you can reuse this plastic as much as possible)

Masonry (Brick or Breezeblock) Wall:

Any wall that is hard, not hollow, and crumbles with dusty substance when you drill through it, creating red or black dust. PRE-DRILL (Pilot hole) with a masonry bit, make sure the diameter of the bit matches your Rawlplug. Mark holes to align with your brackets/ mount plates, etc. Set drill to hammer setting.

Plasterboard Wall:

Sounds hollow when knocking on it. When drilled, white plaster dust is produced. Made of standard 1220mm x 2440mm boards/ sheets. PRE- DRILL (Pilot hole) with a wood drill bit. If the artwork is very light, you can sometimes get away with no predrilling and screw the screw or hammer the nail straight in. Plasterboard has crumbly properties and can wear over time. You can get long term specific Rawlplugs, but for a temporary display, you can use these. If you plan on installing something "heavier" on plasterboard, you might need to assess what plug or fixture you are using, considering the depth of the void area behind the plasterboard.

MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard)

Sounds hollow when knocking on it. When drilled, brown or reddish brown fine dust created (Be careful, as sanding or cutting large areas of MDF produces a lot of toxic dust - when doing this, make sure you have extraction and a N95 dust mask). Made of standard 1220mm x 2440mm boards/ sheets. No pre-drill necessary! Unless installing hooks, you would need to drill a hole slightly smaller than the hook diameter, so the spiral thread is caught. This material can swell if water is absorbed into it.

Plywood or OSB (Oriented Strand Board)

Similar to MDF, sounds hollow when knocking on it. When drilled, yellow/ light beige wood flakes are created. Made of standard 1220mm x 2440mm boards/ sheets. No pre-drill necessary! Unless installing hooks, you would need to drill a hole slightly smaller than the hook diameter, so the spiral thread is caught. OSB might be a little weaker than plywood, due to it's fabrication.

A good tip when drilling through metal is to use masking tape to mark out your hole point, which also helps the drill bit stay steady and not slide around, starting with a small drill bit size, of 3mm and go up in increments.
