BANQUO: How is the night going, boy?
FLEANCE: I haven't heard the clock but the moon has set
BANQUO: And she sets at  twelve
FLEANCE: I think it's later, sir
BANQUO: Here, take my sword. The heavens are being stingy: no light shines. Take this too. I'm feeling heavy and very tired but I can't sleep. Merciful powers, keep away the nightmares that torment me when I rest.
Macbeth and a servant with a torch enter.
Give me my sword!

COMMENT
Banquo and his son Fleance are walking in Macbeth's castle.
Banquo thinks it's midnight but his son responds that probably it's later. His father says that even if he's very tired he doesn't want to sleep because of the nightmares that torment him when he tries to rest. Then Macbeth and a servant enter.

BANQUO: Sir, aren't you sleeping? The King's in bed. He has been in an unusually good mood and has sent great gifts to your servants. This diamond is a present for your wife for her infinite and huge kindness and hospitality.
MACBETH: We were unprepared to his visit so we weren't ready to entertain him (the King) as we would have wanted to.
BANQUO: Everything's good. Last night I dreamt the three Weird Sisters (the witches). They have showed some truths to you.

COMMENT
Banquo is surprised to see Macbeth still up when he enters in the scene. Banquo says that the King's in bed and he has sent many gifts to Macbeth's servants and his wife. Also, he talks about the witches and their truths about Macbeth.

The servant exits
Is this a dagger I see in front of me, with its handle pointed toward my hand? Come, let me grasp you. I don't have you, and I can still see you. Fateful apparition, is it possible to see you but yet not touch you? Or are you just a dagger created by the mind, an illusion of my fever? I still see you, and you look as real as this other dagger that I'm unsheathing now. You're leading me the way I was going already, and I was going to use a dagger just like you. My eyesight is the only sense that isn't working, or it's the only one that's working in the right way. I still see you, and spots of blood on your blade and handle that weren't there before.This dagger doesn't exist. It's the murder I'm planning that's affecting my eyes. Now half the nature is sleeping and being attached by nightmares. Witches offer sacrifices to their goddess Hecate, while old man murder, having been woken by the howls of his wolf, walks like a ghost, like that ancient Roman rapist Tarquin. You firm, solid, stopped earth, don't listen to my steps or their way to walk. I fear the stones will echo and reveal where I am, breaking the awful silence that so well suits what I'm on my way to do. While I talk here of plan, he lives. Speaking cools the heat of my willingness to act.
 A bell rings
 Now I'll go, and it's done. The bell invites me to act. Don't hear it, Duncan, because it is the sound of your call to heaven or to hell. 

COMMENT:
 Shakespeare uses a dramatic element: a hallucination of a dagger. Macbeth describes openly that he is having a hallucination of a dagger in front of him. The aim of this, is to show us that he has decided to kill Duncan. There is also a particular focus on senses: he describes his hallucination by saying that he can see the 'dagger' but he cannot touch it.

Banquo: whenever you want. Macbeth:if you stick with me, when the time comes, there will be something in it for you.
Banquo: I will do whatever you say, as long as I can do with conscience.
Macbeth: rest easy, now. 
Banquo: thanks sir, you do the same.

Macbeth doesn’t want to think about banquo’s dream. He prefers to talk together another time. He thinks that if Banquo shares his projects he will find advantages.
Banquo isn’t sure about it, in fancy there’s not an answer. The scene ends with a ‘goodnight ‘
