Dear Reader,

Romeo and Juliet, a play written by Shakespeare is a complex tragic love story. The children of the rival families fall in love with each other and face many challenges. It soon ends in a terrible tragedy. A recurring theme that was found throughout this play is, "Often falling in love with someone can mean fighting battles and finding ways to overpower hatred even if it means that it may end tragically". It means that being in love with someone can come with challenges and overcoming hatred may not always end happily. All the different genres in my Padlet portray different perspectives from many characters all to show the same theme.

Genre 1 - Romeo's Wanted Poster

I created this wanted poster for Romeo Montague. The reason he is wanted is for a little bit of tomb raiding. After Juliet's fake death and after she is put into her tomb, Romeo comes running to see her "dead" though she isn't. He breaks open her tomb to his wife's body which seems cold and without a pulse. He then explains his feelings and thoughts in a very descriptive way. In Act 5, Scene 3, Romeo says, "Thou detestable maw, thou womb of death, Gorged with the dearest morsel of the earth, Thus I enforce thy rotten jaws to open, And in despite I'll cram thee with more food." Here Romeo describes the tomb as something that was devouring people. He also explains that it is a place that is filled with hate and is taking his beautiful, most prized possession, Juliet, away from him. This connects back to the theme because it shows that even through the hate and obstacles that are thrown at Romeo and Juliet, he will never stop loving and fighting for her. He then opens up the tomb with the crowbar, which is the obstacle that he is pushing through.

Genre 4 - Vision Board of Romeo and Juliet

For my fourth genre, I decided to create a vision board that displays the terrible result of the two lovers; Romeo and Juliet. There are many pictures in my vision board that symbolize death and parting whic shows that people and situations were trying to get them seperated but because of theur true love they overcame this obstacles together, even if it meant they died side by side. In Act 4, Scene 3, the Prince says, "See what a scourge is laid upon your hate, that heaven finds means to kill your joys with love!" In this scene both Romeo and Juliet have died together. The prince is blaming both families for their death. He explains due to their hatred they died, because they loved each other so much they would fight hard until the end of time. This connects back to my theme because it shows that people who are in love are willing to go through the worst situations that hate throws at them.

Genre 3 - Song Ananlysis (Juliet's Struggles)

For my third genre, I decided to do a song analysis that could connect back to my theme for Romeo and Juliet. I used the song "Me and My Husband" by Mitski for my analysis. The main parts of the song can be corroborated by the complex feelings of Juliet. The overall message of this song is not feeling or being accepted by everyone, but that one person is there to love you and accept you for who you are. They help you fight through hate and the challenges that are thrown at you. For example, Mitski says "But me and my husband...It's always been just him and me together...And at least in this lifetime we're sticking together". This connects back to Romeo and Juliet because they stuck with each other until they died because of their true affection and love for one another. Also in Act 3, Scene 5, Capulet explains his rage and explains how he does not accept the decisions that Juliet is making. He states, "Thank me no thanking, not proud me no prouds...Out you green-sickness carrion! Out, you baggage! You tallow-face!" Here he explains how she is not accepted by him because she explained that she would only marry Romeo and not Paris. He expresses this by calling her terrible things. In Mitski's song, she says, "I am the idiot with the painted face in the corner, taking up space, but when he walks in, I am loved, I am loved". She also expresses the feeling of not being accepted by describing herself as an idiot and only being accepted by her husband whom she is loved by. This connects to the theme because lovers stick together through thick and thin when hatred is thrown at them. And later Romeo and Juliet would tragically also die because of their love.

Genre 5 - Text Messages Between Juliet and Paris

For my fifth genre, I decided to create some text messages between Paris and Juliet. Juliet in this situation is having a mid-life crisis when her father, Lord Capulet is forcing her to marry Paris. Clearly she hates the idea of this. She expresses her anger and furstration in many ways. In some places of the play, Juliet also explains how even though she "hates" Romeo, he will be the only one she would marry. This obviously upsets her parents. Also in Act 4, Scene 1, Juliet says "And ere this hand, by thee to Romeo's sealed, shall be the label to another deed...Give me some present counsel; or behold, 'Twixt my extremes and me this bloody knife...I long to die if what thou speakst speak of not remedy". In simple words she is explaining that she would literally rather die than marry Paris. There is also foreshadowing in this scene because she would die without marrying Paris because her true love for Romeo. This connects to the theme because, her father did not accept her decisions so that hatred towards them caused her death. Instead of allowing his daughter make her own decisions he is forcing her into something that she didn't want to do. Her true love for Romeo kept them together even when they died.

Genre 2 - Lord Capulet's Diary Entry

I created a journal/diary entry that was inspired by what Capulet's feelings and thoughts may have been after discovering Juliet's death. This journal was clearly written not long after this tragic discovery. Here Capulet expresses his feelings of sadness and frustration. He also explains his reflection on something that Friar Laurence said to him earlier that day. In Act 4, Scene 5, Friar Laurence says, "The heavens do lower upon you for some ill; Move them no more by crossing their high will". In simpler words the Friar is telling Capulet that due to the issues and wrongs that he has and done was the reason to his daughters death. Because of the family fueds and the hatred he had for the Montagues he didn't allow Juliet to do what she wanted based on the love that she had. He was also trying to get Juliet to do things that she didn't love such as marrying Paris. This connects to theme because it shows that people (Romeo and Juliet) fight for love even if hatred comes in the way.
