Created in 1992, by neighborhood volunteers, LABT had grown into a respected countywide organization that implements a variety of community-based projects in order to build healthy neighborhoods and schools. Over the next several decades, the HBT expanded its efforts to focus on community improvement through extensive tree planting, stormwater capture program, and the conservation of natural resources, green jobs and focus on climate change education. From cost-effective rain barrels to home rain gardens, the workshops offer simple solutions for conserving water at home with education and empower the community to particulate in conservation efforts. LABT works with other educational institutional and government agencies in implementing programs to mitigate climate change. LABT was the LA Tree planting partner in a “Climate Ready Trees” study with the U.S. Forestry Service and UC Davis. This 20 yearlong study brought in 14 tree species from Arizona and Texas and are testing /monitoring their adaptably in various regions of California to upgrade our tree planting palette so California can endure the upcoming impacts of climate change. LABT planted 24 trees in each of 8 Los Angeles regional parks from the new species list and maintained them for the first several years of the study. Among the Hollywood Beautification Team’s (HBT) successful engagements was the Victory Blvd Elementary School Outdoor Living Classroom and Reading Garden.
