The definition of Kapo in night is "Inmate appointed by the SS to head a work unit" (pg.34) . My point here is that these kapos knew the pain the SS officers inflicted on the prisoners. They had felt the same harsh and cruel beatings. But when put in a position of power the execute the same pain among the ones they once were

SS Guards

The SS guards were Nazi soldiers who were assigned to "work" in the concentration camps. Many people believe that ex-Nazi soldiers should be persecuted today and sent away to life in jail or sometimes even killed. Others believe that the soldiers were forced into their jobs by their commanders and that they didn't want to harm the Jews but couldn't resist because they knew they would be killed. And many of them had family's that they had to protect. "The SS seemed more preoccupied , more disturbed than usual. To hang a young boy in front of thousands of spectators was no light matter." (56). This quote shows that the guards did not voluntarily commit these crimes, they were forced by more powerful men.

Elie's personality

Elie's personality took a drastic turn as would anyone's who experience the holocaust for themselves. Elie's personality starts out like any young boys would. Innocent, young, and free child. But soon changes into a fearful and weak. Elie gets through the beginning of his time because of his dad and his faith. But,I noticed that on page 57, when asked where god is, Elie says "Where is he? Here he is-He is hanging here on this gallows...". I believe that when he witnesses this young kid hanging from the gallows, struggling to stay alive, his faith is no longer part of him.

Q : How can one person make a difference in his/her society
A : One person can make a difference because they can influence change too the others. For example, all of the prisoners didn't fight back. Some of them tried but the Nazi officers quickly made a example out of the prisoner. After he was beaten and killed, nobody else dared to speak because they didn't want the same fate. They had the numbers and motivation to revolt but the guards made their sure that all the prisoners knew their power. This example just shows how some power can lead to obsolete control over others.

Adolf Hitler was the Nazi's dictator and was the main reason the holocaust occurred. The title "dictator" means "a ruler with total power over a country, typically one who has obtained control by force."(www.dictionary.com). I see the concentration camps as a mini version of Germany itself during this time. Because of the dictator with complete control, whatever he wants, goes. He has the power so he therefor has control over the prisoners/people.

"Each of us needs to learn as much as we can about hoe genocide happens so that we can be vigilant about preventing its recurrence." (xv). This is a perfect of the saying "If you soak the embers before the catch flame, there will be no forest fire." We cannot allow someone to take complete control over the country's people.
