Beginning in 2015, Loudoun County Public Schools will implement BYOT, Bring Your Own Technology, which encourages students to bring their personal technology tools to school for learning.  As students utilize their personal technology devices in school, they can learn new ways to use them for collaborating and interacting with their teachers and each other to research information, solve complex problems, create original products, and publish their work.  BYOT supports One to the World.

 

BYOT will be introduced to LCPS students in phases. Brambleton Middle School will start as a BYOT school.

Stone Bridge High School is joining in an exciting new initiative in Loudoun County Public Schools: Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT).

 

Through this initiative, we seek to support effective teaching and learning strategies, as our staff and students utilize their own devices to foster collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity. Staff will receive ongoing professional development before and during the implementation process. Students will continue to receive education from the Common Sense Digital Citizenship curriculum, a guide that helps students navigate successfully though a connected world. Additionally, our staff will present and remind students about the guidelines for student use of technology in BYOT environments.

 

We are also partnering with BrightBytes, an educational research organization, in order to learn more about our students’ school and home technology use for learning. For that reason, we are reaching out to ask you to take part in the CASE questionnaire. Your participation is essential in helping us form a more complete picture of technology use for learning in your students’ lives. Please know that all of your responses will remain anonymous to protect your privacy. Below are links you can use to complete the surveys (one for parents and one for students).

 

Families who choose to participate in the BYOT program are responsible for providing devices that will connect and access the school’s wireless network. Technical guidelines are available on the LCPS BYOT webpage at www.lcps.org/Domain/17639. If your student does not have a device to bring to school or the device they own is not meant for travel, they will not be excluded from instruction in the BYOT setting. In that case, students will have the opportunity to use a school-issued device.

 

Students will be responsible for the security of their personal devices. LCPS and/or Stone Bridge High School will not be responsible for loss, damage, or theft of any personal electronic device. Teachers will determine when the use of technology is appropriate for instruction in their classrooms.

 

We intend to begin the implementation of BYOT the first week of school. Our school invites all students and families to agree and sign the new Acceptable Use Policy form that will be coming home the first week of school. This form will be necessary for students to have access on any device while on school grounds.

 

Our school is ready for this new path of instruction. This year, BYOT will become the norm in LCPS. We believe the impact in our classrooms will be positive immediately, and we do not want to miss the instructional opportunities BYOT will provide for our students.
