The parents seem to care most about their identity and how the rest of the family sees her. Awareness of mental health is important to remove stigmas towards people with mental health disorders. They could have been more empathetic and supporting to their daughter.

her parents care more about what people will think about their family if they don’t come for the holidays. This shows that mental health awareness is important in order for people to recognize symptoms for example one of the parents may also have BPD as well as be supportive of someone who is struggling with the illness. they could support her by listening to what she has to say and how she feels and take it into consideration when they make decisions as a family. they could also listen to her needs to help her navigate living with BPD.

This is so classically how the 80s and 90s approach to mental health felt. In some was it was not as harsh as the shock therapy of the 50s but it was still about stigma and social acceptability. Parents suffer with denial almost masking and erasing the needs of their children. We have come a long way since then. Today, there is less stigma and more education around making life easier for those will mental illness. There are a variety of treatment programs for patients AND support groups for parents. The new philosophy is that this is a family recovery process and not just shouldered on the individual who is ill.

Her parents seemed to be more concerned about themselves and what other people might think of their situation. (Their Christmas party)

This show how people might be more concerned about what other people think than what the people with mental illness think. There needs to be more awareness on how to handle these types of situations with family members with mental illness. The parents could have asked Suzan what she thought and how she felt during that meeting. And more in her situation she’s in than concerned about how it second hand affects them.

It’s important to have awareness for mental illness because then it won’t have a negative connotation around it. It shouldn’t be a bad thing and i think talking about it and having awareness will help this. Her parents could have been supportive of her and focused more on her than themselves
