Depressed Tone

After his opening of the door, the narrator "whispered word, Lenore"(Poe, 28), only this and "nothing more"(Poe, 30). The remembrance of seeing Lenore makes it a very sad and depressed tone throughout the story.

Nervous Tone

Whilst he was going towards the door his tone became more nervous. The fact is he was "napping" (Poe 21) and then something came gently "rapping" (Poe 21) and a very faint "tapping" (Poe 22) at his chamber door. He asked for it's "forgiveness"(Poe 20) because he didn't answer the door sooner. This shows that the narrator is starting to feel a little bit scared for he knows nothing on what is past that door.

After the Raven flies through the window, the narrator is surprised and his "sad fancy [is changed ] into smiling" and questions the raven "thou art sure no craven... Tell me what thy lordly name is"(Poe, 43-49). This shows that the narrators tone is one of happiness and kind of mocks the raven flying in.

Relaxed Tone

In the beginning of the book, the narrator is "nearly napping" and heard a "tapping , as of a gently rapping" so he reasoned "Tis some visitor"(Poe, 1-5). These words that the narrator mutters shows the narrators state of being in the beginning. He uses his common sense to rationalize a weird occurrence creating a relaxed tone.

</sub>

Once the bird flew in, the narrator "sat engaged in guessing" trying to guess what the bird "meant in croaking 'nevermore'"(69-70). This shows a tone of rationalism again, depicting the narrator to be still in a good state of mind despite his remembrance of Lenore.

Frantic Tone

With the remembrance of Lenore not leaving his mind, he becomes crazy and starts taking pills to forget the memory. He sees that "the air grew denser"(Poe, 79). The narrator goes crazy and starts calling the bird a "thing of evil . . . or devil"(Poe, 85). This frantic tone shows how the narrator changed from being rational to completely insane in his mindset making the Raven go from a friend to a demonic figure.
