.. the original author, actually gives agency to the people my students described as “struggling,” “attempting,” and “trying.” Not only did she give them agency but by saying “they work,” she implies that they have skill, purpose and goals. And by describing others as “zooming” she implies privilege. "

Culturally I was raised pretty differently then the students, so I am deeply respectful of their home cultures, the ways that the system is affecting them differently from me. I am working on my own healing, unraveling the threads of white supremacy inside of me so that I show up ready to create empowering spaces for the children. I know I need to be careful, and examine the bias that I hold. I have mostly worked with Newcomers/international students during my teaching career and that is where I feel most comfortable, so I feel inadequate and nervous about teaching other students of color.

My education was very Anglo centric so i definitely have bias associated with that. My experience with my family moving from living in poverty to being upper middle class shaped the way I see class dynamics and how they affect educational outcomes.
