Extreme perception and animal intelligence

In extreme perception and animal intelligence by Temple Grandin and Catherin Johnson, they explain the special abilities of some animals through their extreme perception. Intelligence in animals is not based on humanized behaviors, we are talking about some animals that have created their own jobs thanks to their advanced skills, such us forensic dogs that detect drugs, contraband or explosives. Seizure respond dogs which help keep people from getting hurt during a seizure. Furthermore, Clever Hans who is said, is a horse that knows how to count.

There is a case about a woman named Connie Standley who has two dogs that can predict her seizures about thirty minutes before they occur. Topic that is controversial because there are people who have tried to teach other dogs how to predict a seizure but they have failed. There aren’t a lot of dogs in that category but apparently they acquired this ability on their own after trained only to respond to seizures.

Another case where an animal adopts skills without the need for human help is Clever Hans, a german horse, whose owner thought he knew how to solve math problems. Clever Hans was analyzed by a psychologist and he realized that the horse responded all the math questions by following the unconscious movements that humans made and they didn’t notice. The psychologist basically showed that the horse was just a ‘dumb animal’.

To conclude, as far as I’m concerned those animals are more than some think. They have unique aspects that humans don’t and sometimes by instinct they achieve to have very interesting cognitives skills. Clever Hans case for example, he may not have known how to count but he was good at reading people’s signals and responding with it since he interpreted as an obvious answers, that was intelligent. For this reason I do believe that animals are intelligent, even if it's by instinct, their different perspective gives them a good use of cognition.
