Exploring Health Organisations by

In Topic 3 you are looking at different chronic conditions and how helping people live with chronic disease requires a shared responsibility. Australia has many different health organisations which offer information, resources and services for both the health consumer and health professional.
We often don’t use their services as much as we should
This session is to introduce you to some different health organisations and find out more about what they do to reduce the burden of chronic disease and how you can use them in your health care delivery.

NTAHC offers support and education for individuals as well as health professionals by delivery programs aimed at support, education and prevention of blood borne viruses. The main health conditions the organisation targets are blood borne viruses such as HIV and Hepatitis. Training sessions in a range of subjects are available from sex and gender diversity, indigenous sexual health, harm reduction (needle syringe program) and blood borne viruses (BBV). NTHAC run promotional events throughout the year such as World aids day, international sex worker’s rights day, National Condom Day, World hepatitis day etc.

NTAHC is a valuable organisation and I would recommend this website to both clients and health professionals as I feel it offers a great deal in educating and supporting individuals living with a HIV and hepatitis.

Northern Territory AIDS & hepatitis council.
Exploring 'Headspace" by Catherine Brown (s292827)
Formally the National Youth Mental Health Foundation, established in 2006, their target is 12-25 year olds who need help with mental health, physical health, alcohol and other drugs.
They offer telephone services, video consultations, have centres to attend and encourage emergency assistance (call 000, phone lifeline or suicide call back service). Their services are also for family and friends of someone having a hard time, to provide advice and an outlet to discuss the issue.
There is a dedicated section for health professionals who work with young people, giving access to assessment tools as well as online training for GPs and allied health professionals. The blog also looks useful with self-help tips, real stories and a family & friends section.
From what I have seen, I would definitely recommend 'Headspace' directly to the young person I believe could benefit, family & friends and also health professionals - who can gain a greater insight and direction from the professionals in this area.

Headspace is a non-profit organisation founded in 2006 focused at young mental health, it was funded by the Department of Health and Ageing under the Youth Mental Health Initiative Program. Headspace is mainly focused on young mental health as it recognises that over 75 per cent of mental health issues develop before an individual turns 25, therefore they want to offer early intervention, preventative measures and easy assessable support that the younger generation requires.

Headspace offers their clients support during a crucial time in their lives (12-25 years of age being their focus) to help get an individual back on track as well as strengthen their ability to manage and deal with mental health in the future. Due to mental health affecting each individual differently, headspace tailor their programs in a way that is suited to that individual therefore meaning their programs are always changing and evolving. Headspace offers multiple ways for a young adult to access their services, they have headspace centres which act as a ‘one stop shop’ where an individual can go to seek advice or support/help with mental health, physical health, sexual health, alcohol and/or drugs or a combination of these things. Headspace centres are harder to access in regional and remote areas so they also offer a national telehealth service which gives 12-25 year olds access to psychiatrists via video consultations. Headspace recognises that some individuals don’t feel comfortable speaking face to face to someone about issues they are having so headspace also have an online and phone support service which is staffed by young mental health professionals. This last service can stay anonymous.

Headspace can be organised to come to schools to provide mental health education, they also can give training and education to school staff and parents so that they can better support students and/or their children who are experiencing mental health issues.

Headspace is a healthcare organisation that I would most defiantly recommend to either clients or health professionals if I thought they could benefit from this organisation. It is an inviting and easy assessable service which acknowledges differences between one person to the next, it demonstrates this acknowledgement on the home page of their site stating that they not along acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as Australia’s first people but it also goes on to acknowledge diversity and that headspace welcomes all people irrespective of faith, sexual orientation, ethnicity and so on.

Headspace.

(K. Kirakosyan NSW)

The best way to prevent chronic disease is to EDUCATE FROM YOUNG AGE on the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Not a diet, not a gym junkie regiment - LIFESTYLE. Being healthy does not need to be something YOU DO, but rather something YOU JUST ARE. I too often hear teenage girls say 'I'm being healthy this week'. It has been identified that maternal obesity is one of the main risk factors of childhood obesity (Ncube, Khamker, Van Der Westhuizen & Corbett, 2017). Therefore a wholistic family approch is required in addressing childhood obesity.

Go4Fun is a FREE 10 week healthy lifestyle program for kids 7-13 and their families. The free kids activities are great, nut also time restricted - have to be at a particular venue on a particular day during work hours...
b). Majority of my colleagues already have the health and nutrition knowledge. If them and their children do have the BMI above healthy levels it is not due to the lack of knowledge.
c). BMI can be above the healthy range in a healthy and active person, as it can be within a healthy range in an unhealthy, inactive person.

The Heart Foundation, created in 1959, aims to fund research and develop education programs to improve prevention strategies, diagnosis and treatment processes for heart disease in Australia. While the focus is on research one early intervention launched by the Heart Foundation was to implement post heart event care as previously there was a lack of support for patients leaving hospitals after heart surgery. Today The Heart Foundations offers clients community programs and fund-raising events to raise money to continue research and promote awareness and education surrounding heart health, additionally earlier this year working with politicians to add heart health checks supported by medicare, making these heart checks more financially available to a greater proportion of the population. In regards to health professionals, The Heart Foundation works to provide research findings to improve knowledge surrounding heart diseases to improve patient care and outcomes as well as the provision of supportive tools for health professionals to utilise.
As a training health professional, I would recommend The Heart Foundation as a information source as they are well known and trusted, have previously provided some positive contributions to the health sector and have a positive reputation for promoting community involvement and information promotion.
