Idaho's Approach to Meeting Student Needs

About 10 years ago the state of Idaho adopted the idea of "student-centered" learning. This has allowed them to meet a much wider variety of students more effectively. Student-centered learning brings in some new approaches such as,

Allows for a more personalized and differentiated learning style.

The student's skills will be determined by "Mastery-based" Education.

Essentially, this means that the student's progress will be based on their demonstration of mastery, not compared to their classmates.

It also opens doors for collaboration between students, their families, educators, and community partners.

Student-centered learning applies the same goals for each student. The way it is personalized is how the educators approach making sure that each student is reaching the goals they have set.

The goal of the Boise School District is to provide linguistically and culturally diverse learners with equal access to inclusive learning opportunities. One of their biggest programs is their English Language Learners Program. This program was put in to ensure that students who had a native language other than English were receiving the same content in a way they could understand along with being able to speak English proficiently.

For elementary students, they have 11 sites with certified ELL teachers that provide integrated learning. Meanwhile, secondary students receive their support from Language Academy, and study skills courses specifically designed for them.

The Boise School District certainly puts a lot of their resources and funds into making sure that all of their students are obtaining the education they deserve. They have tons of resources and opportunities for many different types of learners from ELL Groups, Independent Study, and even Digital Learning. I believe this shows that they are truly doing all they can in trying to reach each and everyone of the students that comes through their doors.

Personal Review on the School District

Boise School District is an admirable school district that seems to have the best interest for their students in mind. I believe they have many programs to support students that may have different learning needs. Although, there is not much to criticize them on for improvement, I would like to see a bit more information on the strategies they have to teach their teachers about new learning methods. Education is something that is always changing and improving. How is Boise School District keeping their staff up to date on these constant changes? Other than that, I think they have checked nearly every base regarding their students, and overall I was thoroughly surprised at all the programs and resources they had to offer!
