Giacomo Contarini

James? Uhm Giacomo! ‘You can call me James if you want, that’s my name translated’. That is what Giacomo told me, but I prefer his Italian name! He’s a boy who lives in Bagnacavallo. That is near the larger, maybe better known cities: Bologna and Ravenna in the North-East of Italy. He was born on the 4th of January in 2004 which means he’s 18 now. He’s happy with his birthday, he wouldn’t be fond of having a late one like in December. He values films more than series because, he thinks they aren’t boring, long and often the same. He admires the drama, mafia and crime genre in films. His favourite ones are Scarface and American Gangster. He enjoys theatre in general, anything between the most amateur people presenting the play and Hollywood actors performing. He’s a fit and sporty boy who can appreciate all types of sports! In 2020 he moved to Siena, Tuscany to study dance at a dance academy. It was instructive, but it all turned out to be extremely hard, so a year later he returned to Bagnacavallo to continue studying there. A great passion of his is reading. He would recommend his favourite books To Kill a Mockingbird and Roots. His goals in life are to travel a lot, visit the great, large cities but also the often forgotten, underappreciated little towns and villages. His dream profession would be to become an architecture engineer. Fun fact about Giacomo is that his brother is currently working abroad in the Belgian town of Ostend. What a small world!

Zita Zwaenepoel

Interviewing Zita allowed me to find out about life in Northern Europe and to explore the
differences between my life as an Italian student and Zita’s life as a Belgian student. It was fascinating!
Zita is an entertaining and friendly girl, who appreciates her own dynamic and fast life. Her typical day, which takes place in Tielt, isn’t so different from ours. Everything starts in the morning, when she doesn’t seem ready enough to face the day; she prefers, indeed, staying out late in the evening, but school starts for everyone.
Back home from school, she dedicates herself to the things and activities that make her happy:
hanging out with her friends, playing the guitar, doing ‘KSA’ on Saturday afternoon, going on a bike ride. She likes finding new places and making new friends. As one might imagine, Italian culture has made an impression: she loves eating pasta. Often and willingly in the evening, she cooks for her entire family, made up of Paulien, Femke, her sisters, Matteo, her brother, Arianne and Koen, her parents.
I’ve always wondered what it’s like to live in northern Europe, over and over again. And finally, after meeting Zita, I can say that it is, without any doubt, a magnificent experience.

When I spoke to her the first time, I saw first her commitment and her great attitude to do team assignments. My first thought was: she is in some sports team or has a big family. It turns out I was right: she both is a big sister and plays volleyball in the club Tievolley. She explained that the prefix Tie is short for Tielt, which is the city where she also goes to school and lives. She likes music a lot, and her favourite artists are Amy Winehouse, Tyler the Creator,Macklemore and Adele. Since she said she’s always with earphones on, I asked her a weird question, which was her favourite line in a song: “Do you look both ways when you cross my mind”, that tells me she is reflective and quite romantic, but what are you expecting from someone born on Valentine’s Day? Her

favourite genre of movies, books and tv-series is thriller but she also likes sci-fiction: her favourite series are Stranger Things, La casa de Papel and Shameless (a sci-fi and 2 thrillers). Her love for travelling and the dream of visiting all the continents are quite a family thing: she visited with her mother some cities in Italy like Garda, Milan, Naples and Bari, so she loves Italian food a lot. On the other hand, she is a science-math student IN HER last year and her goal is to become an aerospace engineer. Like me, she can’t wait to go

to university and to party. So, yes, she really looks both ways when she

crosses anyone’s crosses in anyone's mind.

Noemie Telesca

The powerful feminist from Bagnacavallo, 18-year-old Noemi Telesca is fascinated by science. She’s a women’s rightist and encourages female artists. She also likes a few male artists, especially rappers like Leon Faun, Ghali, Bresh and Anastasio. When she has some time off, she likes to read. Some of her favourite books are Salomè and The Handmaid’s tale. At the moment, she doesn’t have any tattoos, but she really wants to have some soon. She enjoys the littlest bits of art, especially the rococo style. Her all-time preferred painters are Klimt and Frida Kahlo. She’s a family person and likes to spend her quality-time with her sister by playing a game of chess. Later, she wants a profession related to science. Most likely her future will include medicine or chemistry. Emotions and reactions are also topics that intrigues her. Before covid, she practised a lot of sport. Now the only recreation she can stand is dance and all the sports you can do in water. After school, she attends drama classes at a theatre named ‘teatro la bassa’ which is connected with her school. Stand-up comedy can delight her as well. Her absolute favourite stand-up comedian is Hasan Minaj. But don’t worry, she’s never acting off-stage, she’s too honest for that!
