In honor of Catharine Tipton, an incredible teacher whose passion for literature and love for animals left a lasting impact on me. A memory to share with John Greene:

As a former teacher myself, I never been a huge fan of report cards. But the one report card I’ve kept for four decades is John’s report from my 8th grade year. His encouragement and belief in me helped me transform me from a shy, insecure preteen to someone who knew what was important to them and what they believed deeply in, both in my small world and the bigger world around me. This world view has shaped my entire academic and professional life. John taught me goodness of character in ways that are truly intangible. I am beyond grateful to have been his student.

A memory to share with Jennifer Swift. We were reading “A Separate Peace” (a book I’ve kept with me through countless dorm, apartment, and home moves). Jennifer lit this spark in me that literally felt like falling in love with books, reading, and writing. In one chapter of this book, I did some research and put together that the author was referencing “et tu brute” when one teen character in the books betrays another. Jennifer made me feel like I was on top of the world and had uncovered something special (despite what in hindsight was likely an obvious literary connection). What a gift— to make a child believe they are special and can do amazing things. I am eternally grateful for Jennifer and all she taught and gave to me.

Brian, Rick, and Mark - you all really made Paideia my home for my last high school years! Whether that was making AP Enviro less scary, teaching me how to properly dust for prints, or putting up with my terrible Python variable naming conventions - it made my two years at Paideia memorable and helped shape me into who I am today!

I've achieved a decent amount academically and professionally, but few things compare to the pride I felt making the Indie 500 list in John Greene's class in 1998 (still waiting on that trophy?). John had a way of turning curiosity into something productive, which helped spark my lifelong love for learning. Now, as an educator, I can only hope I inspire some of the same excitement in my students.

To Jennifer Swift, who taught me how to discover my voice and become a writer... to Jennifer Hill who instilled the principles of clarity and integrity in communicating with the public.. to Jack Bross who showed me the fringed beauty of Bowie and CAN... to Joe Walsh for leading us out of the allegorical cave... to Clark Cloyd for teaching me the importance of faith and doubt (and John Donne)... to Charlyn Shepherd for always believing in me, more than I did at times... to Tom Pearce for braving the battle of teaching Economics and War to highs schoolers (and leading the Mock Trial team to state)... and of course to Steve Sigur, a mentor we all lost too soon, who showed me that math and art could not be more intimately intertwined in their pursuit of the beautiful and divine...
