In the context of globalization, the internationalization of education has become the theme of the era (Madge, Raghuram, & Noxolo, 2015). Study abroad is an important form of educational exchange and cooperation. As is known to all, China is an important source country for international students (Huang, Kern, & Oades, 2020).

In recent years, China has consistently ranked first in the number of international students. Chinese students study abroad, learn knowledge and skills, and expand cultural exchanges (Gu, 2009; Gu & Maley, 2008). The international flow of Chinese overseas students has a huge impact on the education, economy, society and other aspects of China and those countries where they study (Carlson, 2013; Dreher & Poutvaara, 2011).

As a result, it is important to study the role of media in the event of Chinese students taking overseas education and investigate how media representation could amplify its influence when Chinese students making decisions (Matthews & Lawley, 2011).

Through analysis, it is concluded that in media reports, Chinese overseas students mainly fall into four categories: "cultural communicators who integrate into local society", "victims of criminal incidents", "diligent and motivated students" and "beneficiaries of various policies". Among them, the reports of The United States, The United Kingdom and Australia, as English-speaking countries, show a relatively consistent reporting tendency and pay strong attention to the accidental victimization of overseas students. Japan, on the other hand, pays more attention to the social performance of overseas students.

In the reports of various countries, the image nature of international students and the reporting attitude of the media tend to be neutral. But at the same time, the media reported on the subject still exist on the choice of theme and role positioning imbalances, report shows gender differences exist in the absence, reports say, such a reporting framework is partial to a certain extent, to the situation of all the Chinese students of local unable to make a comprehensive description.

Through the data analysis of relevant samples, it can be found that when foreign media report on the choice of destination for Chinese students to study abroad, they generally maintain a neutral attitude. However, apart from Japan, some related reports in other countries had some theme imbalance to some extent. For example, they highlighted the impact of novel Coronavirus on Chinese students studying abroad instead of analyzing the impact of different countries on economy and society.
