"It had filled me with a sublime ecstasy that gave wings to the soul and allowed it to soar from the obscure world to light and joy. The sight of the awful and majestic in nature had indeed always the effect of solemnizing my mind and causing me to forget the passing cares of life" (Shelley 93).

In the beginning of chapter nine, Victor and Alphonse were very upset about Justine's death. Victor was so upset that he contemplated suicide and was in a bad state of mind. Then, Victor spent time in nature which brought some relief to his feelings of sadness and guilt. While he's spending time wandering, Victor comes across the creature. When he saw the monster, his mood changed from happier to furious. He was not happy to see the creature who he did not like. It showed the hatred Victor had for the creature he spent so long to create. The creature begins to tell the story of his life, he was lonely and sad. He had no one and struggled to find food and a place to stay. This tone made the readers more sympathetic to the monster. Tone is overall important in the story because it creates moods during different events to make a better understanding of the characters emotions.
