Before plastic, cardboard and glass were used to package food. This way of packaging was used up until after the Second World War. Then plastic began to be produced rapidly after the Second World War. Then again during the 1960's and 1970's, when plastics started to replace traditional materials. Plastic began to replace other materials because it is cheap and easy to manufacture into a variety of forms. Today almost everything is made of plastic.

About 36 percent of all plastics produced are used in packaging, including single-use plastic products for food and beverage containers. Consequently about 5.3 million to 14 million tons of plastic goes into the ocean each year. This leads to a new study that has found deep-sea animals with plastic in their stomachs. Because of the plastic, an estimated 100 million marine animals each year die from the effects of plastic in their environments and bodies. About 700 species have been affected badly by plastic in oceans.

The problem is that to progress, everyday people need to do research and take steps in the right direction, without this no problems will be solved. The issue currently is that many people don't know what they can and cannot recycle. Things that can be recycled include limited plastics, paper, glass, aluminum, etc. Currently many groups are cleaning beaches, informing others, and helping marine life. Steve Hynd is a campaigns manager at City to Sea, an environmental group lobbying for the end of plastics.

This is very important in order to clean our world.
