As adults we move around a lot. Walking, running, talking, typing. We all have to learn these, step by step.

Before we stand, we sit up, before we sit up we wriggle. The life we live we move all the time and we need to learn to move from the start.

Wether it is with dancing on the floor through wriggles and giggles or jumping to the tune of something on the radio. Every small movement is the start to a bigger movement later.

So physical movement can be as simply as laughing and raising eyebrows to lifting a knee up to your chest.

There are different kinds of movement or motion. Passive and Active. In short weather we have resistance and stretching, or using our muscles without outside help.

https://www.pippinperformance.com/post/2017/11/08/passive-vs-active-range-of-motion

Passive activities can be Yoga, tai-chi or a simple breathing exercise. Life can be so organized and set that we hurry too much and forget to slow down.

Moving to fast or rushing can cause anyone to stress. Adults and children, stress is not good for our health. Nor is letting life and priorities drag us alongside it at high speed.

So we all need to learn to slow down, and how to cool down. From simply reading a book too basic breathing, it helps the body and our emotional health to find time to just be.

Breath in for 1, 2, 3, 4, hold, 2, 3, 4, out, 2, 3, 4, and in, 2, 3 ,4. Did you take that exercise with me? How do you feel after taking a simple breath? Long, slow and focused. Think about how it feels compared to when your worried about the next task you need to do everyday, every morning. Do you feel any better or worse?

If something so simple can help us to relax and calm ourselves, why wouldn't it help children too? Going slow and just stretching, even holding your leg up behind you or against your chest, is a passive exercise.

Reading a book together, reading is still a physical movement. Listening, speaking, reading aloud is still movement. It can help us and children improve our language skills and knowledge. Even movies have morals we can all learn. So too with books.

To be actively moving is something everyone days everyday, wether they think about it or not. Walking, talking, looking, listening, eating all use muscles. They also all become auto pilot. They become actions we do without thought and they happen because we use our muscles on purpose.

But what we do everyday doesn't always keep us healthy or happy. Exercising in general produces happy hormones and endorphins but what's auto pilot, we may not notice anymore, because it becomes routine.

So every now and again we need to do something using our fine, (little) or gross, (big) muscles, that's different to that routine. We could dance to the radio or even that song in the credits. We could play with finger puppets, or make some bread. Enjoy together kneading dough and watching what your mixture can become.

Speaking of muscles, we still need exercise one big one, that is used with everything we do, by challenging ourselves. Our brains. Even puzzles and word searches use muscles, from our fingers and hands, to our eyes as we search and our brains as we recognize everything similar or different.

Balancing active and passive activities helps us learn to amuse ourselves. Oh look we can overcome boredom. Eye-spy and maybe even spelling. Have you ever tried to spell out what letters there are in a lisence plate? Or play cricket, netball, basketball, or even good old catch or roll the ball.

We are still using our muscles, our brains and hand-eye coordination in all of skills. Even typing. Could you always type the way you do now?

Everything we try that's new or different to us comes under the word challenge. If its a puzzle with 5 pieces or 50, if you've never done it or aren't a regular at it, can present a challenge. Maybe after enough puzzles you can get in a 500 piece puzzle. Wouldn't that be a brain and hand exercise. Let alone a practise in patience and persistence.

When its said that development begins at the beginning, they mean it. Learning can come from everything we see, hear and feel from the start.

Every baby starts testing their range of motion eventually. From monkey see, monkey do, too ooh what does this feel like? Reaching and grabbing are part of their start of physical motion. Just as much as poking out a tongue, laughing, smiling and baby babbles, trying to talk to you.

They can wriggle to dance, they can roll over to find you. They can work out how to use their necks from their tummies to see you talking to them. Then to move to reach you. Everything a baby or toddler does is part of their process of learning and growing.

Try to think the next time you see a child doing something, is there something you do in your life, that uses the movements they are learning to do.

Developmental Domains

For those who don't know what these are, they are five key parts of our development that are always growing. Every action or event that occurs in our lives affect our development. From our personalities to how we react to things.

Physical + Social + Emotional + Cognitive + Language

The five above are these Developmental Domains. They are inter-dependant and inter-related. Which means like ripples what effects one, affects them all. Like one rock being dropped into a lake, stirs the water, the plants, the fish and the dirt.

We can be physically social in teams and even just reading or painting side by side, in parallel play. In a team trying to score a goal? In Sing Star on the PlayStation or X-Box, trying to out sing someone. Congratulating a good game or being a kind winner or loser. Being social is about every interaction with another living being in our world. Even animals, and how we interact can be in physical forms. Form patting a dog or cat, to putting up a bird feeder and leaving that lizard in your garden to do its role; in the Circle of Life.

It can help us smile, as a family and find moments to laugh and be happy about. Keeping our emotions in check and teaching us how we can relax when we need a way.

Being physically active can stimulate our brains, they do have to work our muscles so we can move. They do strengthen our hand-eye or hand-foot co-ordination and our awareness of where we are in our environment. In our lives and our homes or even cars and boxes and playgrounds.

Language is about more than words. More than letters on a page or screen, more than speaking. Who has played tag? Who has tried to sneak up on someone to say boo? Who has tapped another on the shoulder? Our body has its own language that we show.

Whether we have are arms crossed and are rolling our eyes, or are rolling are eyes with a huff. They are our bodies language. But so do our hands. Some of us move our hands as we speak, is that not part of their language?
