1. Key Concepts
- Dissent: One of the film's main themes is dissent. Edward Murrow is using his platform as a newsman on national television to oppose the actions of Senator Joseph McCarthy who makes false accusations of Communist influence in order to give himself power.

- McCarthyism: The whole era of the the "red scare" and the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) was pushed by Senator Joseph McCarthy. Very few actual sentences were handed down to anyone, but McCarthy created a culture of fear across the nation by drumming up fear of Communism to such a degree that individuals started to mistrust and judge any person thought to be a Communist.

1: Specifically, the role of partisan media in being able to preserve a political narrative. As shown, CBS was universally critically of McCarthy’s inquisition, yet how does this promote a clear debate? It would appear to be that the role of the media was less about fostering this debate, but rather about being demonising political actors. However it also conversely made so that McCarthy’s rebuttal to the allegations made against him also purely took the form of ad hominem attacks against the reporter. Hence, one must be able to infer that the quality of political debate as preserved by televised media was not so much based around the fostering and promoting of fair exchange of information, but rather the promotion of narratives and counternarratives.
2: How well did the film represent how debate and criticism of government was conducted in 1950's America?
3: Not a great deal
