Initial care: clean the wound, apply an antiseptic then a bandage

Post care: continue to clean the wound, make sure no dirt or debris is in the wound and take antibiotics if needed

Initial care: apply direct pressure to stop the bleeding, clean the wound and cover with a sterile bandage

Post care: if the wound is deep stitches or staples may be needed, avoid strenuous activity

A surgical cut in the skin

Initial care: Leave the sterile gauze or bandage over the incision for a couple of days, apply steri strips if necessary underneath the gauze

Post care: keep the area clean and dry, limit movement near that incision, follow specific instructions by healthcare provider

A small hole in the skin typically caused by a sharp object

Initial care: Stop the bleeding, wash the wound, apply ointment and cover the wound

Post care: Change the bandage and continue to clean out the wound until it is healed

An injury where a body attachment is torn away from its original point of attachment

Initial care: stop bleeding, immobilize the body part if needed and put it in a sling

Post care: Stitches or staples for skin avulsions, surgery may be needed to repair muscles or tendons, physical therapy to regain function

Universal precaution is making sure that the scene is safe and that you are able to help an injured person without risking injuries to yourself or anyone else

First step to removing gloves is to place 2 fingers under one glove and pull the glove up until it comes off. Then turn the glove inside out and place that glove in the other glove. Once that happens then you take the other glove off and dispose of the gloves without touching the outside.

If the wound has pus, swelling, pain or the person has a fever that is a sign that the wound may be affected.
