The map shows how after America received the California and Nee Mexico, it broke up the equal tie between free and slave states and brought up the conversation of whether new states should be consider free or slave. This also led to the idea of popular sovereignty which allowed the people that lived their to decide for themselves

It was also about how the Northerners were discontented with the Fugitive Slave Act.

The Compromise of 1850 was proposed by Henry Clay where California was admitted as a free state and divided the Mexican Cession into two (New Mexico and Utah). It gave California popular sovereignty, where citizens could vote for slavery within or without the state. The slave trade was banned in D.C, however, California had to adopt and enforce the fugitive slave acts. Document One shows the territories and their positions during the time of the Compromise of 1850. The document shows the southern slave states and the northern free states, followed by states that were open to popular sovereignty. This compromise caused tension between the north and south as both had different perspectives on slavery. Slavery was the main underlying cause that led up to the Civil War.

California is shown as a free state and Utah and New Mexico are open to choose whether they want to be free through popular sovereignty. The Democrats and Republicans were willing to compromise over the feud about slavery in California and divided New Mexico into Utah and New Mexico territory. However, the Compromise of 1850 was a factor that led to the Civil War because it made an uneven division between the amount of free states and the amount of slave states. The end of the slave trade in D.C angered the South and wanted them to fight to keep slavery which led to the Civil War

The Fugitive Slave Law notice from 1851 warns people of color in Boston to distrust the authority due to the Fugitive Slave Law (Doc. 4). The Fugitive Slave law was created along side four other laws in the Compromise of 1850. This law forced Northerners to return fugitive slaves to the South. Northerners, many of whom were opposed to slavery, refused to abide by this law enacting liberty laws that allowed people to break this law. This met opposition by the South for not abiding by the law. This tension between the North and South over the Fugitive Slave Law would become one of the factors that would lead to the Civil War.

To save the union Henry Clay and Stephen Douglas embarked to create a compromise to appease both the north and the south. The compromise of 1850 shown in document one added California as a free state, created the fugitive slave law, allowed for popular sovereignty in all western territories and banned slags trade in Washington. This created an increase in sectionalism due to the fight between the north and south about the spread of slavery into the western territories that gained the right to popular sovereignty.

After the Fugitive Slave Law was passed, fear was provoked among free and escaped slaves, because they would always have to keep their papers on them and avoid the police so they would not get caught and sent back to the South.

The Fugitive Slave Law Notice warned all runaway slaves in the Northern states that they must be returned to their masters by law (Doc. 4). This forced all citizens of the north hiding runaway slaves to return them back to the south. This caused tension between the North and South because Northerners opposed slavery, while the south thought slavery was vital.

The Compromise of 1850 forced Northern police officers to capture and kidnap any free and escaped slaves and send them back to the south for slavery. The Fugitive Slave Law Notice was the North wanting to warn free and escaped slaves about these Laws. (Doc 4) The north didn’t appreciate this because because they didn’t want slavery to spread therefore forcing them to pass liberty laws defying the Fugitive Slave Laws. The South, who were pro slaves and thought of them as property, saw anti slave laws as a violation of their Constitutional right and thus participated in the Civil War.

The Fugitive Slave Law Notice created in 1851 alerted free people of color to be aware of the dangers surrounding them, including kidnappers who would attempt to force them back into slavery for a reward (Doc 4). The Fugitive Slave Notice contributed to the already large tension between the free a North and enslaved South, as free slaves had paranoia of being forced back into slavery. In addition, The Fugitive Slave Notice created a loop hole through the in tact act, The Fugitive Slave Law, which called for free slaves to be captured and sent back to their owners. This warning angered the southerners, creating yet another factor leading to the civil war.
