A. Effective communication is key to empower a service user. Having clear communication will allow the user and worker to have a full understanding of task at hand (eg making informed decisions about their health and lifestyle). This will help them feel heard, supported and more independent eventually boosting their confidence and self-esteem.
B. By talking clearly and in a way the service user will understand. Having a friendly tone, active listening, Adapting communication to meet service users needs, Giving and receiving constructive feedback, and showing empathy and respect are all good communication practices when helping make informed decisions about their health and safety. NO SLANG.
C- Some barriers may occur that might hinder empowerment. This could be language barriers (whether that be language, non-verbal, deaf or not willing to talk/ lack of self confidence). Social isolation, Environmental barriers such as: distraction, noise, lack of family support, negative attitude from society
to overcome these we would use different communication techniques. Eg sign language, speech tablet (for non-verbal and or autistic individuals), allow service user to feel safe and supported so they feel more comfortable to be open, translation devices and apps to overcome language barriers.
Having sufficient knowledge of a patients culture, language and customs can help health care workers to communicate clearly and avoid prejudice and miscommunication.

A}Contributing to an individuals needs and preferences helps improve their sense of empowerment because it allows them to know that there not alone in their situation. This creates an environment where the person feels comfortable and appreciated. As a result, this will now allow the person to be more motivated, responsible, independent and resilient.
B} A situation in where a persons needs and preferences was overlooked was in a classroom. This situation is based on Tom who was 14 years old in his English class. Tom struggled with LD which created some barriers in his communication. This tends to make Tom overlooked in his classroom environment. Due to this Tom tends to feel very anxious and frustrated whenever he enters the classroom environment and whenever asked a question.
C} Healthcare professionals can tailor their approach to meet diverse needs and preferences to promote empowerment by focusing cultural barriers. A scenario where this may be portrayed is when a women of colour becomes pregnant and is overlooked and neglected by predominantly white healthcare professionals. This can be conveyed in increasing rise of black female deaths caused by maternity.
