-We are only able to observe that which we are – men.
-Men are under some sort of moral law that they did not make up, but they cannot forget. They know what they should obey.
-Metaphor of a mail man delivering mail. We do not know what our neighbors receive. We can only assume based on the mail we receive. The 'mail' or moral law is what we as humans should follow, but we cannot know what other beings' (i.e. animals, trees, etc.) laws are. The 'mail' or moral law is provided by Someone with a mind and a purpose.
-Now people can believe in the Materialist view or the Religious view. Some have chosen for a middle ground of Life-Force Philosophy, but if they believe the life on this planet has purpose or a mind behind it, they align more with the Religious view. However, these people tend to switch God on and off. They have "all the thrills of religion and none of the cost."

Chapter 2: Some Objections (pt. 2)

In the second section of chapter 4, Lewis addresses the objection that Moral Law is a social convention. He begins by noticing just because someone teaches us something, does not mean it is a "mere social convention," comparing Moral Law to the example of mathematics--both are true, even though they are taught. He gives two reasons for this. First, the differences in Moral Law throughout cultures and centuries are not really that significant. Second, when there are clear differences, we believe one set of moral ideas is better than another (e.g. Nazism vs. Christianity), showing that we compare them to a standard (a Real Morality). Finally, he ends with a discussion on the English witch trials. Lewis believes they were not necessarily morally corrupt, but had incorrect information. Today, we do not believe there are witches. It is not always a difference of moral principle, but sometimes a difference of fact.

1) The Law of Human Nature

The law, peculiar to human nature is called the Law of Nature, because people know this law and it does not have to be taught. Even though different groups, civilizations and generations have different moralities, there is still a common ground found in all groups. Although there is differences in what is considered selfish, selfishness is globally recognized, across all ages as not a good thing. Although all humans innately have the law of nature, no human is able to keep it. Many times we fail to keep the behaviors and standards, we expect from others. This proves how deeply all humans believe in the Law of Nature. Because, humans believe in goodness, decency so much, it is hard to admit that that they often fail to be good and decent.
First fact, all humans have a general Law of Nature
Second, all humans break the Law of Nature.

What Lies Behind The Law explains that there is another law which we did not invent and which we “ought to obey” in regards to the Law of Human Nature and Right and Wrong. Two views are mentioned which are the materialist view (people think that matter and space happen to exist) and religious view (people think it’s conscious and has purposes). There is no right view and explains how ever since men were able to think, both these views came up. Science cannot prove which view is right as science only works by experimenting. This chapter goes on to explain that if there is “something behind” then it will either be unknown to men or make itself known in some different way. To conclude part 1 of chapter four, the article states that it is a matter of common sense (supposing that science knew every single thing in the whole universe).

Here, Lewis sets out to explain the “Moral Law” running in all of us. He explains that moral law is not to be confused with our two animalistic instincts (1.desire to give help—also called “herd instinct” and 2. desire to keep out of danger—instinct for personal survival). The moral law is the principle that judges between the two and guides toward deciding which to follow. He uses the illustration of a piano to further explain this term, where our instincts are the keys and the moral law guides the tune. The moral law tells us to hold back our instinctual desires in certain cases, leading us toward right conduct.
