Emmanuel, Grace, Elena, Miranda, Leo

Workshop had it wrong - think about life experience and diversity and more about thinking holistically.

Cultural diversity may be more about awareness rather than hard-and-fast rules.

Q: How do you engage with people, without infringing on sensitivities?

What strategies can we use to manage different energies in the class? And how much of our own stores/experiences can we inject?

1) Approach problems with universal issues/themes.
2) Do not put people on the spot, but allow opportunities to mediate, compromise and consensus-driven.
3) Have ranges of activities and different levels of interaction. Be careful not to make assumptions.
4) De-personalise situations by referring to readings, themes and existing arguments.
5) Encourage evidence-based argument. Help students understand it is not about correct answers, it's about justifying opinions.
6) Tutor can express own opinions if asked, but leave it open for debate.
7) Cultural experiences could be used to benefit the discussion, not to alienate. This includes making assumptions about views/backgrounds.
8) Do not let popular opinion dictate your theme. Do not reduce arguments to binaries, but open up to intersectional dialogue.

an interest group around on diversity and inclusion TO ADD A POST: Simply double click in the space, or click the '+' button at the bottom right corner.
Scroll down for more space.

After the session sign-ups, return to this laptop.

Do the awkward 'So, we're a group' thing. Count to about 20 before someone takes charge and moves to ...

Take this laptop with you. Find a space where you can work together. You can use the breakout spaces in the building, head to one of the rooms from the workshops, anywhere you like!

Your task as a group is to:

Discuss the topic

Arrive at at least one practical response or outcome from your discussion. A problem solved? A thing to do? Be productive. (Stuck? See below for some suggestions.)

Debate. Discuss. Do. You have until 3pm.

You can use this padlet wall to keep a record of your conversations and outcomes. Easiest way: choose a scribe. Just scroll to make more space.

At 3pm, head back to the Forum Theatre. Bring this laptop with you. Yes, you will be asked to report back ... so pick a reporter now to save everyone looking expectantly at each other later on ;)
