Initial Formative Assessment: Have the students solve 4 problems, written on the board, solved individually on their own paper. The four problems are whole number multiplication problems which they should know how to do. As the students think they have solved all the problems have them write their name on the board in the order they finished.

This allows students to review information they have already learned and to begin thinking how this will relate to today's lesson.

Group Formative Assessment: Invite students, in the order their names are written on the board, to come to the board and solve the problems they were given during the Bell Ringer exercise. They must explain to the class how they arrived at the answer as they solve the problem.

This will allow students to discuss the logical process and allows me to gain insight into how they are thinking through the problems. I can correct misunderstandings immediately as this will be foundational to successfully understanding the new lesson.

Have students open their workbooks to the current lesson and have a student read aloud the concept for the day. Discuss what that concept means and then apply it to the problems on the board, modifying them slightly to use decimals. Let the students suggest what to do first before giving too much direction.

Here students are encouraged to talk through what they understand the text to be saying. I can then immediately see if the explanation or the concept itself is clear to the students or if it needs further clarification.

Have the students use personal whiteboards to answer a series of problems written on the classroom whiteboard to check for individual understanding. One problem at a time the students will reveal their answer and I will quickly scan the room to see who got it correct. Discuss the solution before moving on to the next problem. Repeat until general understanding seems sufficient.

This allows me to quickly see how many are understanding the concept and who might be struggling so that I know if further group instruction is needed or just some individual conferencing.
