Fantasy vs Reality

The kids grew up in a false fantasy world driven by their delusional parents. They believed everything their parents would tell them about how they were lucky to be living how they were and about how good they have it. A significant fantasy is that they will build a glass castle and live in it. When they are in Welch and buy a house Rex says "The house itself isn't much, but we won't be living in it long." page 151 Meaning that they would eventually build their dream glass castle on the land. That dream and fantasy was quickly shot down because the foundation holes they dug for the castle quickly filled with trash.

Self sufficiency

Starting as early as 3 years old, Jeannette was being self sufficient because she was cooking her own meals which ended in her getting badly burned and hospitalized. Everyday her parents would ignore their children and send them out to play all day by themselves. Jeanette and her siblings had to learn how to fend for themselves to live because their parents wouldn't care enough to cook and buy food to give to their children. While they were in Welch, Rose went to Charleston to take college courses to renew her teaching certificate, Jeannette was tasked with the family budget to spend on food. Page 209 "That left me, at thirteen, the head of the household."

Acceptance

Jeanette and her siblings had to accept that their life wouldn't change for the better if they didn't do anything to change it themselves. As they grew older into their teen years the children began to see through their parents lies and realize the truth about their situation and the truth about their parents. The kids had to accept that the glass castle would never be a reality because the foundation for the castle was their reality which was full of garbage. Page 165 "Y'all Walls don't burn garbage, y'all throw it in a hole next to your house. you live in it" When Ernie told that to Jeannette her mind seized as she realized that they do live in garbage

The life of the Walls family was full of chaotic moments and a few in order times. When the whole family was in the court hallway after the hearing. Everyone started letting out their built up anger of one another over their life time. They were arguing, yelling, and blaming everyone for problems they had in their life. Brian as a cop had to step in and separate them to calm the situation before it got out of hand. A time when things were in order is when the kids had their own lives and things were just going smoothly. "All of us kids had our own lives. I was in college, Lori became a comic book company, Maureen was going to high school, and Brian was working towards being a cop." Page 262

The Walls family resisted to live how others lived because they wanted to live their own way. They didn't care what people thought about them because they wanted to live how they wanted. On page 157 Rose says "Life's too short to worry about what other people think, Anyway they should except us for who we are." Jeannette asked her mom about what people would think about them continuously throwing their garbage out in the back of their house letting it pile up. Rex did try fixing up the house but stopped short and let the house deteriorate more and not calling a truck to haul away all the trash which help contribute to the trash pile continuously growing.

All of the kids matured early and came of age quickly. For Jeannette she was already cooking for herself at 3. On page 221 Jeannette says "That was my last whipping// like Lori, I was going to get out of Welch" This show her coming of age and finally trying to get a grip on her life to be able to live a more stable life somewhere away from her parents. She was only 13 years old at the time, she continued working and saving money for Lori to get out first. Jeannette had to do all the planning by herself with some help with Lori. She knew it had to work because she was finally being able to see through the lies and the reality they have been living.
