This is #1 for me because it is so much bigger than school. It reversed Plessy vs. Ferguson and deemed "separate but equal" unconstitutional. This not only allowed for students of all ethnicities a chance at a better education but was also a turning point in the race relations in the United States. Students from all backgrounds were able to learn among each other and eventually form relationships that led to the betterment of society.

Kindergarten is plays an important role in the American Educational system. It allows children to develop much needed social skills and learn how to communicate with their peers and make friendships. Kindergarten also introduces the children to a new environment outside of their home and gives them perspective without their parents or guardians around. Academically, kindergarten gives children a head start on basic concepts such as counting and the alphabet. The head start these children receive benefits their academic career all the way to the collegiate level and is backed up by credible research and evidence.

#3 The Public High School

The High School experience is important for many reasons. Academically, this is where students start to learn what really interests them and can potentially put them on their life path. Students learn basic concepts of many subjects that they will be able to apply to everyday life once graduated. This is where students are challenged and exposed to views they might not have seen before. Also, this is an important age where students can form lifelong friendships. The American children are extremely fortunate to receive an education for free. Children fro other countries around the world are not so fortunate and would do anything to learn basic concepts such as reading and writing. This country has a come a long way in our education system. During the colonial times, education was not accessible to all children, just those belonging to the upper classes. Now in the United States of America, access to a free public education is a right to all.

#4 No Child Left Behind Act

The No Child Left Behind Act shed the light on an important problem the American Education system was dealing with. Thanks to Brown v Board, students were able to go to school with one another, but it did not necessarily mean every school was receiving the same education. Schools in low income areas were not receiving the same education and performing as well as schools in areas with more money. This act affected what tests were taken by students and how teachers were trained. NCLB set a national standard and learning goals for schools and focused on how teachers can effectively teach their students despite their social and economical standings.

#5 Old Deluder Satan Act

The Old Deluder Satan Act was a stepping stone for the American Education system. It allowed a local community member to teach the children when a towns population reached a certain size. It is named "Old Deluder Satan" because the Puritans valued literacy, and they thought satan wanted people to be ignorant so they could not understand the Word of God and read scripture. This act allowed a towns to have a general education for their community. This took the teaching responsibility away from the parent's and gave it to the local community. In doing so this allowed children to become literate and able to read scripture.
