Great session Brian, when will we as a company, from a risk perspective, have an integrated approach to systems, databases and analytical tools?

Answer - We are certainly making incremental improvements towards this. In the safety arena, the introduction of SMIS+ will enable us to bring together a large variety of data sources that were previously contained within seperate systems. We are also working with the Business Intelligence (BI) team in Route Services and ORBIS in being able to join together multiple data sources via 'data warehouses' with overarching BI tools. There is still a lot to do to streamline and integrate what we do company-wide to achieve this vision.

Grayrigg, Potters Bar and Hatfield are well-known incidents where the rail industry failed the public by not doing basic maintenance activity. How will the new systems and processes you have described, help stop these basic behavioural errors?

Answer - the investigation into these events and their resultant recommendations have result in a number of changes to our safety management system. Our reporting and analysis systems enable us to identify trends in precursor events and maintenance non-compliance, but our safety culture, technology and frontline supervision is at the heart of this.

is there an IRM qualification for those that have worked extensively in Risk but don't have the time or capability to return to study?

Answer - IRM does have a process for recognising prior learning in various forms, including experiential learning 'on the job'. It is possible to apply for exemptions from Modules 1-5 of the Diploma if you can prove that your learning covers the syllabus to the required level. It's best to call our office and talk over your options with our expert team as everyone's experience is different.

A further option is our Technical Specialist membership - if you have a qualification at an equal level to our Diploma (e.g. ACA or ACII or a masters in a risk related subject) and you have been working at a senior level in risk management for a number of years, you can apply for Technical Specialist membership and use the letters SIRM after your name.

More information on our website www.theirm.org.

Poor pay etc may lead to fraud.

Answer - It takes all three aspects of the Fraud Triangle to occur in order to create the ideal environment for fraud to take place. The 'opportunity' aspect is the aspect that you can most easily influence / mitigate.

There is also an 'Executive Route' that is being trialled over the coming year. This will admit very senior risk professionals on the basis of a verified portfolio of experience and interview.
There is also technical specialist membership, not linked with IRM exams, which admits members who hold a related professional qualification or masters together with an appropriate number of years of experience.

How do you share your lessons learned and make sure the lessons are implemented and embedded throughout the organisation?

Answer - We have started to capture them against our risks and include them as part of our risk committee reports, this on its own is improving the level of debate about the effectiveness of our risk mitigation activities. We have also alinged this to our financial planning and forecasting processes and many of our risks have an incident processes where root causes are identifed and learn shared by e-mail alerts. We still have a lot to do in this area, in particular embedding across the whole of our organisation which will be a challenge, but early signs are good and that it is enriching the quality of discussions on risk.
