In the beginning of the book he runs away from the school problems. 
He also runs away from his family problem because he feels that he doesn't fit in. This relates to Cather in the rye because of Holden and how he lost his brother Allie.  Allie was the only thing that Holden cared about in his world as he explained to Phoebe.
