Through the 50s, the role of women in and around Switzerland was much different than countries such as America, the UK and Australia. Women in these European countries were encouraged to train and to get employment before having a child. When a child was born, women were then expected to be the 'perfect house wife' much like how women were perceived in the Western countries. When the child grows up, the women should return to the workforce to continue to work.

- Rich country (Switzerland)
- By 1950s, Switzerland develops its powerful modern economy.
- Neutral country -extremely insular: did not really step into wars.
- Expressionism was famous in the 1900s
- While the industrial sector began to grow in the mid-19th century, Switzerland's emergence as one of the most prosperous nations in Europe
- During WWII, Germany considered to attack, but never did.
- Under general Henri Guisan, the Swiss army prepared for mass mobilization of militia forces against invasion, and prepared strong, well-stockpiled positions high in the Alps known as the Reduit.
- During World War Two, the Swiss Franc was the only remaining major freely convertible currency in the world, and both the Allies and the Germans sold large amounts of gold to the Swiss National Bank.
- Attempts by Switzerland's small Nazi party to Anschluss (joining) with Germany failed miserably, largely due to Switzerland's multicultural heritage, strong sense of national identity, and long tradition of direct democracy and civil liberties.
