Valley Forge was easy  defensible because its location between high hills and the Schuylkill River. The  Continental Army was in bad shape in 1777. Many solders lacked supplies or clothing. Most of them where at the starving point. They built over 1000 huts.  Many solders did not have  blankets or shoes. For food they got a flour mixer called “firecake” and an occasionally meat and bread. In February,  a former German General named Baron von Steuben tough the american army how to be real solders. During the 1700s through 1800s most of the men were running out of food clothing  and water. While they were dealing with starvation they were also trying to build up their protection but  they never were dry because of all of the snow that was melting.
