         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>"If you have a pasture where you grow soybeans and it gets flooded by 25 feet of floodwaters and you end up with 3 feet of oozing mud on top of your pasture, it's going to be a long time before you can plow -- certainly one year,"&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>A failure in the system of levees would change the landscape considerably.<br><br>If the floodwaters remain on the ground for 30 days or so, "then we probably would not be able to get a crop in this year."<br><br>"We should really be thinking about whether we want to continue to live in really stupid places, because nature is going to exploit our stupidity," Dakka said.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>- The Morganza Spillway was opened in May to alleviate the flood risk New Orleans and Baton Rouge; allowing the flood waters to spill out into the wetland areas of Louisiana and Atchafalaya Basin<br>- Flood waters deposited much needed sediment into the wetlands , adding a layer up to 12cm deep of nutrient-rich mud in areas close to the Atchafalaya distributary.<br>- Flood sediment helped to flush out some of the oil that had covered the Louisiana coast following the devastating 2010 Gulf of Mexico 🇲🇽 oil spill<br>- Fresh water flushed out the bayous of stagnant water and brought in fresh, oxygenated waters and nutrient-rich sediment.<br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>People: short term<br>* 43,000 effected&nbsp;<br>* 30 dead (low due to forecasting and evacuation<br>* Displacement occurred e.g the US army courps blew a 3km hole in the birds foot levees to protect the city of Cairo, however it forced 200 people to be forced to leave their homes in new Madrid due to increase flood risk. 100 homes were damaged in the blow up.<br><br>Economic&nbsp;<br>* 800million dollars worth of agricultural loses in Mississippi<br>*19 casinos closed for 6 weeks. 13000 loss in income for employees and 14 million in tax revenue.<br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>&gt;The USACE estimated that the total damage to buildings was around $2.8 billion and that more than 21,000 buildings were affected.&nbsp;<br>&gt;Spills flooded 100 homes with over $360million worth damage&nbsp;<br>&gt;Flood peak moved through Mississippi state from 15th-21th May caused $1 billion damage, impacting 2,600 businesses and homes&nbsp;<br>&gt;in Memphis the levées that had been built to protect the downstream area worked but the flood waters instead covered the suburban areas, flooding 1,300 homes.<br>&gt;Further downstream again as the flood peak moved through the Mississippi state from 15-21 May, it caused 1 billion of damage.<br>&gt;Despite the presence of temporary levées in and around Vicksburg, flood waters impacted more than 2,600 businesses and homes.</div>]]></description>
