- The Morganza Spillway was opened in May to alleviate the flood risk New Orleans and Baton Rouge; allowing the flood waters to spill out into the wetland areas of Louisiana and Atchafalaya Basin
- Flood waters deposited much needed sediment into the wetlands , adding a layer up to 12cm deep of nutrient-rich mud in areas close to the Atchafalaya distributary.
- Flood sediment helped to flush out some of the oil that had covered the Louisiana coast following the devastating 2010 Gulf of Mexico 🇲🇽 oil spill
- Fresh water flushed out the bayous of stagnant water and brought in fresh, oxygenated waters and nutrient-rich sediment.
