Bolt has fastens pieces together and because it is fastens things, it is also known in a group of a things that we use fasteners, a screw is another one for example for in the group of thing called fastener. I will explain about the head and the thread.

This is the head of the bolt, and if we take its measurement across the head of the bolt , this will give us the size of the spanner and wrench that we need to use to the bolt.

So, if the measurement across the head is 12mm, we need 12mm spanner/wrench.

A bolt also has thread. And we measure the diameter of the thread will give us the thread of the Bolt.

So if the diameter measure is 8 mm, we need to have no 8 bolt.

The thread on a bolt is cut , normally nowadays the thread is cut using a cnc machine, but for one a off piece, you also need to use die. You cut a thread an external thread with the die.
