Sendak displays Max's lesson through leadership and independence. The author clearly demonstrates the power Max's mother holds over him. His poor actions, result in the mother sending Max to his room, to think about his actions. When Max enters the "land of the wild things", he starts to hold the power over the wild things. His control over the monsters illustrate the power he lacks in his household. AS max continues to reign over the wild things, he looses interest in being in-charge. Sendak displays Max's loss of interest as a symbol of the mothers feelings of having a disobedient child. As Max is rebellious in the mothers world, the monsters are wild in his new world. The monsters represent the himself, and how difficult he makes others lives. Ultimately, Max learns that taking care of delinquent people is hard, and he should try his best to be more well behaved when he returns.
Ryan Grace

Sendak uses the wolf suit to illustrate Max's frustration, anger, and fear. Wolves are mainly represented as aggressive however, once they are pressured, they run in fear. Max parallels this image, because he is mean to his mom, but once she strikes back, he runs to his room in fear. Sendak displays Max's frustration because he doesn't get what he wants from his mom. This symbolizes a wolf, because a wolf is a predator. Max tells his mom "I am going to eat you", a very bold statement from a child. This statements represents Max's aggression towards his mother. When he is sent to his room and travels to the "land of the wild things", he joins the wild things, because he feels he is one if them. Sendak emphasizes this parallel, because like wolves, he feels comfortable with the same "things" as him. However, he eventually wants to go home. Once he felt threatened by someone more superior, he runs back in fear. These wolf like emotions illustrate why he wears the suit, because he feels like he is the wolf in his life.
Ryan Grace

Magical Child

In Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are, he establishes a magical child who can do things that the other character cannot. Sendak illustrates Max as the magical child. His magical power is the ability to stare into the eyes of the monsters which tames them. He stands out from the rest of the wild things and this is displayed through the fact that he is the only real "human" child figure in the text. Max is the only wild thing that is able to control when he is wild and when he is tame. Sendak displays Max’s magic tricks as a form of power that he has over the wild things. Max establishes his control over the wild things and this symbolizes his control that he has over his parents. The author cements Max’s power through the stillness of the wild things. Max controls the wildness of the wild things just like his mother tries to control him. His mother chooses to be more reserved in her control, but when Max goes to the island and sees the wild things, he learns that he has power to control what they do. Max’s mother denies him the right to eat if he doesn’t contain his wildness; contrasting Max who denies the wild things to eat regardless of their status. His mother tells him to go to his room and Max takes this and applies is to the wild things. Sendak supports the idea that when children are given power, they do not know how to manage their power and can go overboard with it. Max assumes his role as the “all powerful” when he tames the wild things and controls them in order to do his bidding as throughout his entire life, he has been forced to do what his mother asks of him. Max displays himself as the magical child through his wolf suit. There’s an “alpha” in every pack and Max takes his own place as the one in charge. Through Sendak’s illustration of Max, he explores the idea that children are going to be wild because that is their nature and it is the parents’ responsibility to “tame” them and have them learn how to be civilized.
Aiden Banico

Sendak shows Max trying to become tamed. He needs to tame his wildness and become civilized. He finally sees this when he has to deal with the wild animals like his mother has to deal with his wildness. Sendak uses this example to illustrate the hierarchy of a family and instead of Max's mother having the power, when he runs away he obtains the power. The power is the lesson that Max learns when he has to know who holds and who can revoke that power. He didn't know this until he became the ruler of the wild things. He uses his prior knowledge from his mother when she takes the food away from him, he does the same thing to the wild things because they are acting up just like he was. He now realizes that he has to respect the people above him in the hierarchy system and this is the lesson he takes away from his task of being the leader of all the wild things.
Abbie Stevens

Sendak solidifies the helplessness of Max. Max is sent to his room when he threatens to "eat [his mom]". Max becomes powerless against the power that his mom holds over him. His imagination leads him to a paradise where he is able to have power that he does not have. Making characters such as the Wild Things the subordinates of Max. But, after the fun had ended he realizes what the power really is. Therefore leaves the Wild Things as he accepts his helplessness to which food was out for him as he is still under his mother's influence.
Christian Chung

Sendak uses food as a symbol of power throughout the children's book Where the Wild Things Are. Max is acting up and tells his mother he is going to eat her up, which symbolizes what he believes is his power in the household. In response to this, his mother revokes his food for the night because she has the power to do so. This is when Max realizes that he doesn't play that role in his household and he ran away to where he would have that power. When Max becomes the ruler of the wild things, he knows that he now has the power. When Max obtains this power he realizes the power of seniority in a situation and he also comes to terms with his place in his family. He realizes what he said to his mother was inappropriate when the wild things say to him that they'll eat him up because they love him so. When he is the one with the power he comes to terms with his place and learn to respect his mother because she is caring for him.
Abbie Stevens

Thus, leaves while the Wild Things who were helpless in stopping Max because even though they "...love him so". Unable to grow up like Max can does not leave like Max can and stays within the forest. The Wild Things are a constant that never grows up. After he is back into reality he starts to grow up as he takes off his wolf costume which symbolizes the singularity of being the different one.
Christian Chung
