The roles of women were limited during this era. They were considered to be a "weaker" sex. Men were expected to be the "breadwinners" of the house. It was believed the women constantly needed men to look after them, they were considered inferior, "All throughout their life, the women of the Elizabethan times were made to become dependent on a male relative - father, brother, uncle, husband, or other" (Mahabal). If they were married their husband looked after them, if they weren't married their brother or father would care for them. They weren't allowed to have serious professions. Though many were well educated they weren't allowed to attend schools or universities. They didn't do anything other than cook, be maids, and other domestic jobs. Some were painters but that was the furthest they got from domestic jobs. Many women took up writing and literature. Women also couldn't perform on stage acting. Acting was considered dishonorable for women. Women were played by young boys. As poorly treated women were in society they weren't allowed to be beaten by their husbands. They could be lightly chastised. If a husband was caught cheating he could be prosecuted.

Prostitution has been around for centuries. From the Incas to the Romans prostitution is the oldest profession in history. Lucky for the women who had particular "skills" there were 2 main districts in London were brothels thrived, Southwark and Bankside. These were the main places because they were on the edge of jurisdiction. Eventually the city gave that land to the Church by King Henry II. Eventually regulations were put place. Things like wages, rent, hours, and health examinations were established. However the fear of syphilis scared people into closing brothels sending prostitutes to the streets. There was an official registration counting about 7000 prostitutes in Rome and 11,000 in Venice, but street prostitutes weren't registered so those numbers were low. The prices for a night with a whore varied from £10 to 2d as stated in A Mirror for Magistrates of Cities, "a young man might have to part with 40 shillings or more in a brothel for a bottle or two of wine, the embracement of a painted strumpet and the French welcome. The French welcome was another word for Syphilis. By the end of the sixteenth century prostitutes could be found almost everywhere. Petticoat Lane, Hog Lane and St. Kathenrine's, in Smithfield, Shoreditch, Westminster, Clerkenwell and in the liberties of Whitefriars, St. Martin Le Grand and Coldharbour.

There wasn't a lot expected of men during the Elizabethan era. They were expected to work and look after their wife. That was about it. Men were allowed to do a lot more different things than women. It was actually a crime to insult men during that time period. Women couldn't speak their mind, if they did they would be punished. Eventually it even become normal for women to be treated poorly. It was so normal that the mistreatment of women was being taught to children. Women were raised with the thought that they were inferior to men. "indeed that they were the one imperfection created by God," Roberts, Russel, pg. 37

It was the biggest goal of a women to get married because they needed someone to care for them, at least in the eyes of the other men. Women could get married at the age of 12. Though it was allowed many girls didn't marry until later teenage years. If a women couldn't marry for whatever reason she could become a nun. Women who weren't married or nuns were for the most part labeled witches. Also premarital sex was dishonorable and cast shame upon the women. Men and women wouldn't just marry anyone they were expected to bring a dowry, a dowry is anything from money, goods and property. Men wouldn't just marry any women, "Elizabethan women were expected to bring a dowry to the marriage" (Alchin).

Despite this most were happy with their simple but good life. Since women were considered weak it was OK for them to be depressed. Only when it was taken too far would it be considered "insane."

This was one of the few things women were treated equally during. The methods used for treating insanity were used for both men and women. Most women weren't sent for treatment for insanity because it was OK for them to be depressed or have melancholy, since women were considered weaker than men. Those who were sent faced these methods of extreme treatments like waterboarding, swing chairs, drug therapy, and blister therapies. These therapies were supposed to cause vomiting and pain. This was expected to take the person's mind off of being insane or depressed.
