The town was not supportive or accepting of his brother, causing that revengeful mentality. Along with that he wanted to obtain land whether the meant someone one would die from it. Putnam had a serious obsession over his land and others land. He was not very forgiving or generous.

Putnam is trying to persuade good nurse and get her to believe it's witchcraft when he probably has no idea himself
