Entry Task: Tell me what was your favorite thing you did this weekend OR tell me about something nice you did for someone else this weekend. 


Physical or Chemical Change? Ever wonder what kind of change is happening? Today you will find out in Chapter 5. The chapter is short but there are 3 student sheets that go along with the chapter. 

First, you will read the chapter or listen to the chapter in LabAids. Next, you will answer the guiding question on page 31 on the back of student sheet 5.1. 

Then you will define the following words: chemical change, physical change, chemical reaction, precipitate. The first 2 definitions (chemical change & physical change go on the front of student sheet 5.1 and the other 2 definitions (chemical reaction & precipitate) go on the back of student sheet 5.1

Now, looking at the table on page 33 use the evidence in the each scenario to decide whether the change is physical or chemical. There are 6 scenarios so you should have 6 answers in the second box.

We're getting closer to Friday. I'm so excited for this weekend because...well I'm taking a few days off and going on a much needed vacation. That means even though I'm supposed to be relaxed, I'm not, my to-do list is so long. I have so much to do before my trip. Sometimes it can be hard for us to stay organized and keep track of what we need to work on or get done. I like to write notes in my phone, on sticky notes, in my planner, and on paper. All of that can be helpful but I always wonder if there is a better way? Entry Task: Tell me about the best trip you’ve ever been on? Where did you go? Who was there? What did you do? What made it memorable? 


Today you will be working on the Physical/Chemical changes comic strip. The sub will pass out both sheets and you should read the instructions carefully. I explained what you were supposed to do on Thursday but you are also responsible for reading and following the instructions carefully. Make sure to check off each box on the instructions sheet so you know that you have completed that part. Be sure your comic strip includes all of the required information. And last but not least be creative! Think of a story, a character, something unique and be creative when you incorporate the physical and chemical changes in your story.

Some ideas we talked about: 

*a chef competing in a cooking show where you can show the physical and chemical changes with the food, fire, water, cooking or preparation process

*people having lunch together and talking about the physical/chemical changes the food goes through

*A crazy scientist in a lab

*A student participating in a science fair explaining the physical/chemical changes to the judges 

*A person camping in the forest, chopping wood, starting a fire to keep warm and cook dinner

*A mother and child in the kitchen having a conversation about physical/chemical changes to the food that the mom is making 

*A construction worker explaining physical and chemical changes to a new employee (nails rusting, chopping wood, etc) 

*A house catches fire and the physical and chemical changes are explained by the firefighters throughout the comic strip
