In Arrested Development, Michael Bluth is the only honest person in his spoiled, bratty family. Michael displays traits of hard work, having to take control of his father's corrupted company and keep the family in line. Michael doesn't trust anyone, but himself to make decisions for the family. In this song, Kelly Clarkson describes how she is no longer going to let others control her and how she will take charge of her own life. Emerson states in Self-Reliance, "There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion;" Emerson believes that there is a time when a person will come to realize their self-worth, and begin to become independent and rely on themselves for their life choices. In the song, Kelly Clarkson also seems to discover a new self independence, much like power Emerson describes in his piece. One person he failed to mention was the musician, Ludwig van Beethoven. Even when he became deaf, Beethoven still continued to compose pieces for orchestras and pianists, which are considered some of his best pieces. At the time however, Beethoven's music was criticized for being loud and violent compared to the more graceful pieces of the classical era. He states, "A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best; but what he has said or done otherwise, shall give him no peace." According to Emerson, the only thing that can make a man feel truly successful is hard work based on self-reliance.

-Ethos: Emerson uses ethos strategies to appeal to those who are often strangers to or cast away from society. "Misunderstood! It is a right fool's word. Is it so bad then to be misunderstood?...To be great is to be misunderstood." Emerson tells his misunderstood people that they can achieve greatness through their hard work and prove society wrong. 

-Pathos: Emerson appeals to the emotions of the reader by encouraging them to become their own person. He states, "Else, if you would be a man, speak what you think today in words as hard as cannon balls, and tomorrow speak what tomorrow thinks in hard words again, though it contradict every thing you said today."
