Watch PBS Empires - Medici Godfathers of the Renaissance. Then fill in this sheet.

I expect that everyone will write in full sentences, and write something that is meaningful. You can also write down some questions.

After you have completed the sheet, please email it to me at mojonathan181@gmail.com. This is due on Saturday, if you are late the last chance deadline is Sunday 4pm.

Do not write "The people wear funny clothes." or short remarks. A good example of what you should write would be, "Why is the Pope such a powerful person?" or "Why is a dome so important?"

In English this means rebirth. It was originally a French word that was used to describe this time from the late 1300 to the 1600s. During this time there was a great revival in art and learning. They believed that for far too long knowledge and learning was being restricted by the Catholic Church. People wanted to study the writings, art, science and philosophy of the Ancient Greeks and Romans and lived the way they did. They also wanted the freedom to learn more about the world around them. Also some people began to question the authority of the Church and their faith in God after seeing so much suffering during the Black Death.

Think about the word Renaissance? Look up the meaning of "Re-Birth".

1. If something is being re-born what do you think it is happening?

2, What are some other words that you would associate with Renaissance?

3, What did people want that was.........?

Rediscovery of Roman Architecture combined with Renaissance Ingenuity allowed this to be built. The Il Duomo di Firenze is a Cathedral, it was completed in 1436, after work on building it had started in 1296. The biggest reason why it took nearly 140 years to build it was that the builders were unable to put a dome on the Cathedral. The builders wanted to put a dome on the Cathedral but they could not; because the one they wanted to put up was just too big.

Eventually a Renaissance builder named Filippo Brunelleschi completed the Dome in 1436. It took him 20 years to build it. He succeeded where as so many others had failed. By studying Ancient Roman architecture and inventing new construction methods and tools he was able to solve the problem of how to build the Duomo's Dome.

1, Why do you think the people of Florence were unable to build the Dome they wanted to put on top of the Cathedral?

1, If someone says that the architecture/ the buildings are better, what do you think they mean by this?

2, If you want buildings to be better what science/technology has to improve?
