I feel as a dancer I have more strengths in what is involved with learning/performing a piece of choreography rather than an actual style itself. This is because I believe all my styles need working on in their own way and all still need developing. This will be further discussed later in section 2.

I believe one of my strengths is the ability to pick up choreography quickly in all styles/genres. This is something that is crucial within auditions as this is closely looked at by the panel when auditioning. They are testing whether you can pick up choreography as pieces are created in few rehearsals sometimes even on the day of the performance, and things can change minutes before a performance. This is an important skill to have as a dancer.

Another one of my strengths is being able to using style and isolation within a choreography this can been seen in the following video. The use of style and isolation can be seen throughout the combination as the movement is precise and clear. Within dance hall the style is through the musicality by mimicking the way the beat or word is performed. As the two are completely different styles of dance. “Definition of Dance Hall; An up-tempo style of dance music derived from reggae, in which a DJ improvises lyrics over a recorded backing track or to the accompaniment of live musicians.” (Oxford Dictionaries | English, 2017) This is something that is crucial to use as this differs the choreography from being just one level, and to having layers and is aesthetically pleasing to watch.

The principal steps of adagio are pliés, développés, grand fouetté en tournant, dégagés, grand rond de jambe, rond de jambe en l'air, coupés, battements tendus, attitudes, arabesques, preparations for pirouettes and all types of pirouettes.” (Abt.org, 2017)

When learning exercises even though my pick-up rate is one of my strengths the use of performance and being unsure isn’t as strong. This is due to me doubting myself with the exercise and concentrating on getting the exercise right. This needs to change as when going into an audition situation I need to use performance to get the job. To do this I need treat every class as an audition and perform exercises to my full ability making sure I’m not looking down at the floor, as this is a habit I’ve picked up when concentrating.

During Ballet classes, there are exercises during the barre and centre that need working on, these are Adage and Frappes. With Adage, my weakness is my flexibility due to me not having a lot of stiffness within my hips, this makes it hard to hold positions during Adage. This can be progressed by making a regular stretching plan. The other exercise I struggle with is Frappe’s, especially on the left side. Due to the left leg being weaker at holding the upper leg when performing double and triple Frappes. For development, I need to work on muscle tone within the left thigh to be able to hold the leg with no problems.

Something that I struggled with at the start of my time at Shockout Arts was my posture, and is something that has improved a lot during this semester. Within the picture above this was a position that I struggled to sit in due to my bad posture. I believe what has helped this is mainly within my Jazz and Ballet classes through arm work and using and making sure I am pulled up correctly and the shoulder blades are down. Correcting my posture has also helped within other aspects including pirouettes. To improve this further would be during stretching. I need to try to stretch with a flat back, rather than hunched to fully engage in the stretch.

In the video above I perform 4 double pirouettes on each side, and mostly sustain throughout. This is a skill I have improved over the last semester. With movement memory, I have trained my body and mind to pull up while turning. This has made it easier to turn to accomplish 2 turns. Within a pirouette, you need to engage core muscles and pull up to maintain alignment, by spotting and using the right force will help with balance within your pirouette. By connecting your arms to your back and creating a ‘cat and mouse’ effect with the arms this also helps with balance creating the correct shape with your arms in first whether this being performed in Ballet or Jazz. To further my pirouettes, I need to aim for 3 or 4 to advance the skill I have built up.

This is to also help with improving grades within the Jazz and Ballet assessments during kick sequences in Jazz and the Adage and Grande Battement within Ballet this usually pulls my grades down. For the next module, I would like to improve my leaps, this will be easier once I have improved my flexibility as my split leaps are not in flat split in the air. I would also like to learn one trick before the next core techniques module. This would benefit me during assessments and auditions as this would be useful during freestyle to show of what I can do best. When evaluating the video, I also need to work on pointing my feet more, and getting more air time to fully can split within the air.
